Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix slot

The Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix slot lets you choose three of five bonus features before you spin, and the ones you pick become more likely to land. Released by Barcrest in 2016, it is a 5x3, 20-line game with medium volatility and an RTP of about 94% to 96% that changes with your stake. Here is how the choice works and what it costs.

Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix slot explained

Pick 'n' Mix takes the leprechaun theme and bonus games of the original Rainbow Riches and adds one big twist: you decide which features you want before the reels turn. Barcrest, the British studio now owned by Light & Wonder, released it in 2016 as part of its long-running series, which you can explore in our Rainbow Riches series guide.

The base game is a familiar 5x3 grid with 20 paylines. The difference is the menu. Five bonus features are on offer, you select three, and those three get a better chance of appearing during your session. Among the games in our slot reviews, it is one of the few where a choice you make changes what you are likely to see, although, as we explain below, it does not mean you can steer the result.

The specifications follow the developer's published figures. A summary of the features also appears in this Pick 'n' Mix review on Casinos.com (opens in a new tab). We have not verified a maximum win, so look in the paytable for it.

How the features work

The heart of the game is a selection screen. You choose three features from this list of five:

The five Pick 'n' Mix features
FeatureWhat the published description says
Pots of GoldOne of the five selectable features; check the paytable for prizes
Free SpinsThree to five scatters award 10 to 30 spins; triggering symbols become stacked wilds
Road to RichesOne of the five selectable features; check the paytable for the trail
Magic ToadstoolOne of the five selectable features; check the paytable for details
Cash CropOne of the five selectable features; check the paytable for details

Once you have chosen, the three features you picked are more likely to land than the two you left out. The other two are not switched off: any of the five can still trigger. Think of the choice as weighting the menu rather than locking it.

The developer's summary gives full detail only for Free Spins, so that is the one we explain in depth below. Pots of Gold and Road to Riches share names with features in the original game, but versions can differ between titles, so read the in-game rules for how each one plays here. The same goes for Magic Toadstool and Cash Crop, which have no published detail in the figures we use.

Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. Choosing features is different: it costs nothing extra and every feature still has to land in normal play.

Choosing your Pick 'n' Mix features: what the choice really changes

It is tempting to look for a 'best' combination. The honest answer is that the published description says only that your picks are more likely to land; it does not say that any combination raises the RTP. A feature that lands more often may well pay less each time, which is how slot maths usually balances. Unless the rules screen says otherwise, treat the choice as a way to shape the kind of session you enjoy, not as a way to change the cost.

  • Pick what you find most fun. If you like longer bonus rounds, Free Spins is the one with the clearest published mechanics.
  • Don't switch picks to chase a feature. Changing your selection after a quiet spell does not make the next spin more likely to pay; each spin is independent. See the gambler's fallacy.
  • Read the rules once per casino. The RTP can vary with stake and version, so it is worth confirming the figures where you play.

Free spins and stacked wilds in Pick 'n' Mix

If Free Spins is one of your three, it is more likely to show up, although it can trigger even if you left it out. Three, four or five scatter symbols start the round, which awards between 10 and 30 spins, with three scatters at the low end and five at the top. The description does not give the figure for four scatters, so check the paytable.

What makes the round distinctive is the wild treatment. The symbols that triggered the round become stacked wilds for the bonus, so they fill whole positions down a reel and substitute for other symbols to complete wins along the 20 paylines. More spins and stacked wilds are what give the round its potential, but its return is already part of the overall RTP. Our guide to free spins features covers how rounds like this are built.

Pick 'n' Mix RTP: why it varies with stake

Like several Barcrest games, Pick 'n' Mix does not have one fixed RTP. Our checked figure is about 94% to 96%, depending on stake. That two-point gap matters more than it sounds, because it changes the house edge from 4% to 6%.

Average cost of £100 staked at different RTPs
RTPHouse edgeAverage cost per £100 stakedAverage cost of 100 spins at 50p
94%6%£6£3
95%5%£5£2.50
96%4%£4£2

At the low end, the same play costs 50% more on average than at the high end (£6 against £4 per £100). Which stake gets which RTP is set out in the game's information screen, as required by the Gambling Commission's RTS 3 rules on game descriptions (opens in a new tab). Do not raise your stake just to reach a better RTP: a bigger stake still costs more in pounds. Our answer on whether bigger stakes improve slot RTP explains why.

Playing Pick 'n' Mix on a £20 budget

With medium volatility, Pick 'n' Mix tends to pay smaller amounts more regularly than a high volatility game. For a fixed £20, the stake decides how many spins you get and how close to average your result is likely to be. The table uses 95%, the middle of the range, so check your stake's figure.

£20 on Pick 'n' Mix at a 95% example RTP
StakeSpins if nothing comes backAverage cost over those spinsWhat it means
10p200£1Plenty of spins to see several features
50p40£1A shorter session; your picked features may or may not appear
£120£1Very short; the outcome rests on one or two events

At 94% the average cost on £20 would be £1.20, and at 96% it would be 80p. The difference is small at this budget, but it grows with the amount you stake. The session budget calculator can help you set a limit.

Max win on Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix

We have not been able to verify the Pick 'n' Mix maximum win, so we don't quote it. The original Rainbow Riches caps at 500x and the Megaways version at 12,500x, but neither figure tells you this game's cap. Open the paytable, find the top award and multiply it by your stake. Our page on slot max wins explains how to read it.

UK rules for Pick 'n' Mix and other online slots

Pick 'n' Mix is covered by the slot stake limits: £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025 and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 since 21 May 2025. The Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) explains how the cap covers the whole game cycle.

The game design rules mean at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay, no turbo and no fanfare for returns that don't beat your stake. Your net spend and time played are shown on screen, and you must pass age checks before you can play, even in a demo. The RTP information rules explain what a game must tell you about its return.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix?

The RTP of Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix is about 94% to 96%, and the exact figure varies with your stake. At 94% the average cost is 6p per £1 staked, and at 96% it is 4p. The game's information screen shows which stakes get which figure at your casino. Do not raise your stake just to reach a higher RTP. Our explainer on RTP shows how these long-run averages work.

How does the Pick 'n' Mix feature choice work?

Before playing, you choose three of five bonus features: Pots of Gold, Free Spins, Road to Riches, Magic Toadstool and Cash Crop. The three you choose are more likely to land during play, but any of the five can still trigger. The published description does not say that any combination improves the RTP, so pick the features you enjoy most. See our guide to slot bonus rounds for more on feature design.

How many free spins do you get on Pick 'n' Mix?

Free Spins on Pick 'n' Mix awards between 10 and 30 spins, triggered by three to five scatter symbols, with more scatters giving more spins. The symbols that triggered the round become stacked wilds for the bonus, which helps form wins along the 20 paylines. The round is more likely to land if you chose it as one of your three features. Our page on free spins features explains scatter triggers.

Which features should I pick on Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix?

There is no published 'best' pick, so choose the features you find most enjoyable. The developer's description says only that your chosen features are more likely to land, not that any combination returns more. A feature that lands more often may pay less each time. Changing your picks after a losing run will not improve the next spin, because each spin is random. Read about the gambler's fallacy to see why.

Is Pick 'n' Mix better than the original Rainbow Riches?

It depends on what you want: Pick 'n' Mix offers more choice and a free spins round, while the original has three fixed bonuses and a confirmed 500x cap. Both are medium volatility. On cost, the original's 95% RTP sits in the middle of Pick 'n' Mix's 94% to 96% range, so which is cheaper depends on your stake. Our Rainbow Riches review covers the original game in detail.

When was Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix released?

Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix was released in 2016 by Barcrest, the British studio that created the series. Barcrest is now part of Light & Wonder, the Las Vegas-based group that was known as Scientific Games until 2022. The Rainbow Riches series itself dates from 2006. Our Barcrest profile covers the studio's history and its other well-known games.

What is the most I can stake on Pick 'n' Mix in the UK?

At UK-licensed casinos the most you can stake on Pick 'n' Mix is £5 a spin if you are 25 or over and £2 a spin if you are 18 to 24. These caps have applied to all online slots since 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 respectively. Your casino's version may have a lower maximum. Our page on UK slot stake limits explains the rules in full.
