Mega Ball (Evolution): odds and rules
Mega Ball (Evolution) is a live lottery-style game in which you buy bingo-type cards, 20 of 51 balls are drawn, and a final Mega Ball can multiply a completed line by 5x to 100x. Below you will find the draw maths, what more cards really buy you, and how the headline prize compares with the usual result.
Key takeaways
- Mega Ball launched in April 2020 as Evolution's first lottery-style game.
- Each round draws 20 of 51 balls, so any single number has a 39.2% chance of appearing.
- A Mega Ball multiplier of 5x to 100x applies only if the Mega Ball itself completes a line on your card.
- Buying more cards raises your chance of a win per round but raises your cost by the same proportion.
- No RTP was published in the sources we checked, so read it in the game's help screen first.

Mega Ball (Evolution) in two minutes
Evolution unveiled Mega Ball at ICE 2020 and launched it in April 2020, describing it as its first lottery-style game. Rather than spinning a wheel, a presenter runs a ball machine. You buy cards before the draw, numbers on your cards are marked automatically as balls come out, and you are paid for each line you complete.
The twist comes at the end. Once the main draw is finished, a multiplier between 5x and 100x is generated and one more ball, the Mega Ball, is drawn. If that ball completes a line on one of your cards, the payout for that card is multiplied. If it does not complete a line, it simply counts as another number. The format sits between online bingo and keno, with the presentation of a TV show from the wider game shows family.
The Mega Ball draw: 20 balls from 51
Evolution's Mega Ball game page (opens in a new tab) sets out the draw: 20 balls are taken from a machine holding 51. That one fact lets you work out a lot. The chance that any particular number on your card is drawn is 20 divided by 51, about 39.2%, and the chance it is missed is 31 in 51, about 60.8%.
Lines are harder because every number in the line has to appear. For two specific numbers both to come out, the chance is 20/51 multiplied by 19/50, because once one has been drawn there are 19 slots left among 50 balls. Carry that on and the odds fall away quickly.
| Numbers needed | Calculation | Chance | About 1 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 20/51 | 39.22% | 2.6 |
| 2 | × 19/50 | 14.90% | 6.7 |
| 3 | × 18/49 | 5.47% | 18 |
| 4 | × 17/48 | 1.94% | 52 |
| 5 | × 16/47 | 0.66% | 152 |
Check the card layout in the game to see how many numbers a line needs. A card has several possible lines, so your chance of completing at least one line is higher than the single-line figure, and the paytable rises steeply with the number of lines you complete. That steep curve is why most cards finish with nothing or a small win, and a few rare cards carry the big results.
How the Mega Ball multiplier works
The multiplier is the reason the game exists, so it pays to read the rule carefully. After the 20-ball draw, the studio screen generates a multiplier from 5x to 100x. Then one ball is drawn as the Mega Ball. Three things can happen:
- It completes a line on your card. That card's payout is multiplied by the multiplier shown.
- It matches a number but completes no line. It is marked like any other ball, with no multiplier.
- It misses your card. Nothing changes.
Some rounds run more than one Mega Ball. If two Mega Balls both complete lines on the same card, Evolution's rules say only the highest multiplier applies; they do not stack on that card. The practical effect is that the multiplier mostly helps cards that are one number short of a line when the main draw ends, which the game highlights in gold.
Mega Ball cards: what more cards really buy
Buying more cards is the main decision you make, and it is easy to misread. Each card is a separate bet at the same card value. Ten cards at 50p cost £5 a round; 100 cards at 10p cost £10. More cards mean more chances of a line, but the return per pound staked stays the same, because every card carries the same built-in margin.
| Cards | Card value | Cost per round | Cost over 30 rounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 50p | £0.50 | £15 |
| 10 | 50p | £5.00 | £150 |
| 25 | 20p | £5.00 | £150 |
| 100 | 10p | £10.00 | £300 |
Those totals are what you stake, not what you lose; some of it comes back as wins. The average loss is the total staked multiplied by the house edge. If a game had a 5% edge, £150 staked would cost about £7.50 on average, though any single session could be far better or far worse. Use the real RTP from the help screen to replace that example figure.
Evolution's game page gives two different maximum card counts per round, 200 and 400, so check the current limit inside the game rather than relying on either number.
Mega Ball max win: the 1,000,000x claim in context
Evolution's Mega Ball launch announcement (opens in a new tab) in 2020 said players could win up to 1,000,000x their bet. The current product page does not repeat that figure, so treat it as a launch-era headline and look for the current maximum in the game's rules and in the casino's terms, which may set a lower cap per round.
A million-times result needs a card that completes many lines from the 20 balls, a Mega Ball that completes another, and a high multiplier on the same round. Multiply small probabilities together and you get a very small one. That does not make the game unfair, but it does mean the headline prize says little about what a typical evening costs. Our guide to what a max win means applies the same logic to slots.
How to play Mega Ball live
- Open Mega Ball from the live lobby and read the paytable, card layout and RTP in the help screen.
- Set a card value and decide how many cards you will buy each round within a fixed budget.
- Buy your cards during the betting window; you can zoom in to see each card's numbers.
- Watch the 20-ball draw; numbers are marked automatically and the cards closest to a line move to the top.
- See the Mega Ball multiplier appear, then the Mega Ball draw itself.
- Check which cards paid and your net result for the round before buying again.
Mega Ball compared with bingo and keno
Mega Ball borrows from two older number games. The table shows how its draw stacks up against 90-ball bingo and keno, using the formats as they are normally played.
| Feature | Mega Ball | 90-ball bingo | Keno |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balls in play | 51 | 90 | 80 |
| Balls drawn | 20 plus Mega Ball | Until prizes are won | 20 |
| Chance a single number is drawn | 39.2% | Depends on calls made | 25% |
| How you win | Complete lines on cards | Line, two lines, full house | Catch your picks |
| Multiplier | 5x to 100x Mega Ball | None as standard | Varies by game |
| Live or RNG | Live, with a First Person RNG version | Usually RNG or session-based | Usually RNG |
Keno is notorious for weak paytables, with the Wizard of Odds' keno analysis (opens in a new tab) putting its house edge at 25% to 29% in its summary of land-based games. Mega Ball's return is set by Evolution and is not comparable until you have its published RTP, which is exactly why reading the help screen matters.
Live Mega Ball against First Person Mega Ball
Evolution also makes a First Person version of Mega Ball. First Person games use 3D animation and a random number generator rather than a physical ball machine, and a Go Live button can move you across to the live studio. The rules are similar, but the RNG version does not wait for a presenter, so check the round length and remember the UK's 5-second minimum game cycle still applies to non-slot casino games.
Neither version is inherently better value. What matters is the RTP stated for the exact version you open. For a wider view of the trade-offs, see our live casino vs RNG games comparison.
Mega Ball myths that cost money
- Some numbers are hot. Each round starts with a full machine of 51 balls. Past draws do not change future ones, as our independent events guide explains.
- More cards improve the odds. They improve the chance of any win, not the return on each pound staked.
- A big multiplier is due. The 5x to 100x value is random each round.
- Cheap cards are low risk. Low card values with high card counts can cost more per round than a single larger card.
Mega Ball UK rules: what applies
Mega Ball is treated as a live casino game in Britain. Autoplay has been banned for all online casino games since 17 January 2025, including live games, so each round needs your input, though a re-bet button is allowed. The Commission's product design standard, RTS 14 (opens in a new tab), also sets a 5-second minimum game cycle for non-slot casino games and bans playing several games at once.
The slot stake limits of £5 and £2 do not apply, because Mega Ball is not a reel-based slot. You must be 18 or over and have passed age and identity checks before you can deposit. For the full picture read our live casino rules in the UK page.

Frequently asked questions
How does Mega Ball work?
Mega Ball is a live lottery-style game from Evolution. You buy numbered cards, the presenter draws 20 balls from 51, and you are paid for each completed line. A multiplier from 5x to 100x is then shown and a final Mega Ball drawn; if that ball completes a line on your card, the card's payout is multiplied. Everything is marked automatically. It works much like the bingo formats in our online bingo guide, with a multiplier added at the end.
What are the odds in Mega Ball?
Any single number has a 20 in 51 chance of being drawn, about 39.2%, because 20 of the 51 balls come out each round. The chance of several specific numbers all appearing falls quickly: about 1.94% for four numbers and 0.66% for five. Your chance of a line depends on the card layout shown in the game. These figures come from simple counting, explained in our casino probability basics guide.
What is the RTP of Mega Ball?
We did not find a published RTP for Mega Ball in the Evolution sources we checked, so look in the game's help screen, where UK-facing games must explain their rules and returns. Once you have the figure, 100% minus the RTP is the house edge, and that edge times your total stake is your average cost. Our game show RTP page collects the figures that developers have published for other shows.
What is the maximum win on Mega Ball?
Evolution's 2020 launch announcement said players could win up to 1,000,000x their bet, but the current product page does not repeat that figure. Check the game's rules and the casino's terms for today's cap, which may be lower per round. Results near the top are extremely rare because several unlikely events have to happen together. Our page on progressive and top-prize maths explains how tiny chances combine.
Does buying more Mega Ball cards improve my chances?
It raises your chance of winning something in a round, but it does not improve your return per pound. Each card is a separate bet with the same margin, so 20 cards cost 20 times as much as one and lose 20 times as much on average. If you want a longer session, a smaller card count usually does more than a larger one. Our guide to making a budget last shows the arithmetic.
How does the Mega Ball multiplier work?
The multiplier, between 5x and 100x, applies only when the Mega Ball completes a line on your card. If the ball lands on one of your numbers without finishing a line, it counts as an ordinary ball and nothing is multiplied. When two Mega Balls both complete lines on the same card, only the higher multiplier counts. Our multiplier glossary entry covers how multipliers work across live games and slots.
Is there an RNG version of Mega Ball?
Yes. Evolution lists Mega Ball among its First Person games, which use 3D animation and a random number generator instead of a live presenter and ball machine. A Go Live button can take you to the live studio version. Check the RTP for the version you open, since figures can differ between versions. Our page on First Person casino games explains how these RNG games relate to their live counterparts.
Can I play Mega Ball in Northern Ireland?
Online casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission cover Great Britain, and the Gambling Act 2005 does not extend to Northern Ireland, so availability and protections there differ. Some operators accept Northern Ireland customers and some offers exclude them, PlayOJO's welcome offer among them. Check the casino's terms before registering. Our page on gambling law in Northern Ireland sets out how the rules differ.
