Multiplier: casino meaning
A multiplier in a casino game is a factor that increases a win: a 3x multiplier on a £2 win pays £6. You meet them on slot wilds and free spins, on Lightning tables and on live game shows, and the cost of the boost is always built into lower everyday payouts somewhere else in the game.
Key takeaways
- A multiplier scales a win: win × multiplier = what you get.
- Games fund multipliers with lower base pays or an extra fee, so the RTP already includes them.
- Multipliers can add together or multiply each other, depending on the game’s rules.
- A slot’s published max win caps what any stack of multipliers can pay.
- Basic formula
- Win × multiplier
- Lightning Roulette boosts
- 50x to 500x on a straight-up
- Unboosted straight-up there
- 29 to 1 (35 to 1 normally)
- Crazy Time Top Slot
- Up to 50x
- Lightning Dice
- Up to 1,000x
What a multiplier means in casino games
A multiplier is a number that a win is multiplied by before it is paid. If a slot line pays £1.50 on a 50p spin and a 3x multiplier is attached, you receive £4.50. The word turns up across the casino glossary because three quite different things share it: boosts inside a game (slot and live show multipliers), the way a payout is written (a 5,000x max win means 5,000 times your stake), and the multiple used in bonus terms (10x wagering).
The first meaning is the one most players search for. Standard game maths treats a multiplier simply as part of the pay table: it changes how often you see big numbers, not whether the game has a house edge.
How a multiplier works on slots
On slots a multiplier usually rides on a symbol or a feature. Common types are wild multipliers (a wild in a winning line adds, say, 2x), random multiplier symbols that land during tumbles, and a progressive multiplier that climbs with each cascade or each free spin. Our slot multipliers guide covers each type in depth.
Some recent examples from our checked slot data:
- Big Bass Day at the Races: free spins where collected symbols push multipliers up to 50×.
- Christmas Big Bass Bonanza: the Santa wild collects fish money values, with multipliers up to 10×.
- Extra Juicy Megaways: semi-sticky multipliers that add together across tumbles in free spins.
- Gonzo’s Quest 2: avalanche wins grow both the grid and the multiplier.
- Slayers Inc: DuelReels, where two multipliers duel to set a reel multiplier.
Multiplier ranges belong to each game. Never assume one slot’s range applies to another; check the game’s help screen.
Multipliers in live casino and game shows
Evolution built a whole family of games around random multipliers. In Lightning Roulette, one to five Lucky Numbers are struck each round and paid between 50x and 500x on a straight-up bet. In Crazy Time, the Top Slot can add up to 50x to one segment before the wheel spins. Lightning Dice strikes two to four totals with multipliers of up to 1,000x.
| Game | Multiplier range | How it is funded |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Roulette | 50x–500x on 1–5 numbers | Unboosted straight-ups pay 29 to 1, not 35 to 1 |
| Lightning Baccarat | 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x on Lightning Cards | 20% Lightning Fee on each bet |
| Lightning Blackjack | 2x–25x on a winning hand, used on the next hand | 100% Lightning Fee on each initial bet |
| Crazy Time | Top Slot up to 50x | Built into wheel pays; RTP 94.41%–96.08% by bet |
| Super Sic Bo | Random, up to 1,000x | Check the game’s pay table |
The maths: who pays for the multiplier?
A multiplier is never extra money on top of the game. The developer sets the base pays lower so that the boosted results balance out. Evolution’s Lightning Roulette page (opens in a new tab) shows this clearly. A normal straight-up pays 35 to 1 and wins 1 time in 37. In Lightning Roulette an unboosted hit pays 29 to 1, so a £1 bet returns £30 instead of £36. That £6 gap on ordinary wins is what funds the occasional 50x to 500x hit.
Lightning Blackjack takes a different route: a 100% fee on each initial bet. Evolution claims a 0.44% house edge based on the original wager with its own optimal strategy, but Wizard of Odds’ Lightning Blackjack analysis (opens in a new tab) estimates that a player using conventional basic strategy loses about 17.63% of the original bet per hand. The multiplier looks generous; the fee is what you should price.
Worked example: adding versus multiplying multipliers
Games combine multipliers in two ways, and the difference is large. Take a £2 base win with a 2x and a 5x multiplier both in play:
- Added together (2 + 5 = 7x): £2 × 7 = £14.
- Multiplied together (2 × 5 = 10x): £2 × 10 = £20.
Extra Juicy Megaways, for example, adds its multipliers together. Whatever the method, the slot’s max win still caps the result: Christmas Big Bass Bonanza lists a 2,100× stake max win, so at 10p a spin nothing can pay more than £210. The help screen states the rule for each game, and it is worth reading before you rely on a feature you see in a video clip.
Other uses of the word: max wins and 10x wagering
A “5,000x max win” is a multiplier of your stake, not a feature: £5,000 at £1 a spin. And a bonus with 10x wagering means you must stake ten times the bonus before it becomes cash. Since 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission’s rules on rewards and bonuses (opens in a new tab) cap wagering at 10x the bonus. Our wagering requirements guide works through the sums, and the 10x wagering cap page explains the rule.

Frequently asked questions
What does a 2x multiplier mean?
A 2x multiplier doubles the win it is attached to. If a slot line would pay £3, a 2x multiplier makes it £6; on a 10p spin with a £1 win, you get £2. It applies to the winnings shown by the pay table, not to your stake, and if no win lands the multiplier pays nothing. The game’s help screen says whether several multipliers add together or multiply. Our slot multipliers guide gives more examples.
Do multipliers make a game better value?
No, multipliers do not change a game’s value on their own, because the RTP already includes them. Developers pay for boosts with lower base pays or a fee: Lightning Roulette pays 29 to 1 on unboosted straight-ups instead of 35 to 1. What changes is the spread of results, with more small losses and rarer big wins. Compare the published RTP instead, as our RTP explainer shows.
What is the biggest multiplier in Lightning Roulette?
Evolution’s game page gives a range of 50x to 500x for Lightning Roulette’s Lucky Numbers. The multiplier only pays on a straight-up bet on the struck number that wins, and one to five numbers are struck each round. XXXtreme Lightning Roulette goes further with Double Strike multipliers of up to 2,000x. See our Lightning Roulette guide for the full rules and how the lower base pay funds the boosts.
Is a multiplier the same as a max win?
Not quite: a max win is written as a multiplier of your stake, but it is a cap, not a feature. A slot with a 5,000x max win stops paying at 5,000 times the stake, so £1,000 at 20p. In-game multipliers help you reach big wins, but the published cap always applies. Our page on what a slot’s max win means explains how caps are set and shown.
Can I buy a multiplier feature on UK slots?
No. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so UK versions of slots don’t let you pay to jump straight into a multiplier round. You reach those features only through normal spins. The feature buy rule page sets out the history, and the £5 slot stake limit (£2 for 18 to 24-year-olds) applies to every spin you play.
What does 10x mean in bonus terms?
In bonus terms, 10x is a wagering multiplier: you must stake ten times the bonus before it can be withdrawn. A £20 bonus with 10x wagering needs £200 of bets, and the house edge still applies to every one of them. Since 19 January 2026, 10x is the most a UK casino can ask. Use our wagering calculator to see what a given bonus requires.
