Money wheel games

Money wheel games are live casino shows where you bet on which segment a big upright wheel will stop on, and each number pays according to how rare it is. Dream Catcher and Pragmatic Play's Mega Wheel are the purest examples. This page explains the layout, counts the odds segment by segment and prices each bet.

Key takeaways

  • A money wheel has a fixed number of segments, so every outcome's chance comes straight from counting them.
  • Dream Catcher has 54 segments: 52 numbers plus a 2x and a 7x multiplier that stack on re-spins.
  • Mega Wheel has 54 numbered segments, nine betting spots and a random Mega Multiplier each round.
  • Dream Catcher's house edge runs from 3.42% on the 10 to 9.19% on the 40.
  • No sector, pattern or host spin style can make a segment due.

What money wheel games are

Strip away the bonus games and studio lights from most live game shows and you find a money wheel: a large vertical wheel split into segments, each marked with a number or a special symbol. You bet on a number, the presenter spins, and if the pointer stops on your number you're paid at odds linked to that number. The game's rules say how many segments carry each value, and that count is what sets each number's chance.

Money wheel games are the simplest corner of our live game shows section. There are no cards to learn and no decisions after the spin. That simplicity makes them a good place to see casino maths working in the open, because every chance can be counted from the wheel itself, provided the developer publishes the segment counts.

This page concentrates on the two pure wheel games, Dream Catcher from Evolution and Mega Wheel from Pragmatic Play, then shows how the same wheel sits under bigger shows. For how a full show runs, with hosts and bonus rounds, see how live casino game shows work.

How to play money wheel games

  1. Open the wheel game from the casino's live lobby and check the table's minimum and maximum stakes.
  2. Read the paytable in the help screen so you know what each number pays and what the special segments do.
  3. Choose a chip value and place it on one or more numbers while the countdown runs.
  4. Wait for betting to close and the presenter to spin. You can't change bets once the window shuts.
  5. If the pointer lands on your number, the win is paid automatically. If it lands on a multiplier segment in Dream Catcher, your bets ride on to a re-spin with the multiplier applied.
  6. Check your balance and session spend before placing the next round's bets.

Dream Catcher: the money wheel that started live game shows

Evolution's timeline dates Dream Catcher to 2017 and says it created the company's Live Game Shows category. The Dream Catcher game page (opens in a new tab) describes a 54-segment wheel with 52 numbered segments, marked 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 40, plus a silver 2x segment and a gold 7x segment.

When the wheel stops on a multiplier, nobody wins or loses on that spin. The presenter spins again and the multiplier applies to the next result. If the re-spin lands on another multiplier, they stack. Evolution says payouts can reach up to 20,000x through those stacked multipliers.

The rules we checked don't list how many of the 52 numbered segments carry each value, so open the in-game help screen for those counts before relying on any per-number probability. There's also an RNG version, First Person Dream Catcher, covered in our First Person games guide.

Mega Wheel: Pragmatic Play's money wheel with a lucky number

Pragmatic Play's Mega Wheel page (opens in a new tab) describes 54 numbered segments and nine betting positions. Each round, one segment is picked as the Mega Lucky Number and given a random Mega Multiplier. If the wheel stops on that segment, bets on it are paid with the boost.

Pragmatic Play says players can win up to 500x their bet on Mega Wheel. That's a much lower ceiling than Dream Catcher's, which suggests smaller swings at the top end. We couldn't confirm an RTP or launch date from the developer, so check the game's help screen for the return on each betting position. Pragmatic Play's wider studio set-up is covered on our Pragmatic Play Live page.

Money wheels inside bigger live game shows

Many of the best-known shows are money wheels with extras bolted on. The wheel decides the main result, and bonus segments open separate games. Here's how the wheels compare, using developer figures only.

A DigiWheel is a screen-based wheel rather than a wooden one, but you bet on it the same way. For the bonus-heavy versions, see Crazy Time, MONOPOLY Live, Funky Time and Lightning Storm.

Money wheel odds: counting segments

On a fair physical wheel, each segment has the same chance of stopping under the pointer. So the probability of any outcome is the number of segments showing it, divided by the total. On a 54-segment wheel, one segment is 1 in 54, about 1.85%; two segments are 2 in 54, about 3.70%.

That count also tells you the fair payout. If an outcome has one segment out of 54, it loses 53 times for every win, so a payout of 53 to 1 would be break-even. Anything paid below that is where the house makes its money. Multiplier segments complicate the sum, because they boost some wins, so the published RTP for each bet is the figure to rely on.

At least one 7x in 100 spins1 − (53/54) to the power 100About 85%

Notice the last two rows: even a 1-in-54 event is more likely than not to stay away for 27 spins, and there's still about a 15% chance of seeing none in 100. Gaps like that are normal and say nothing about what comes next.

Money wheel payouts and house edge by bet

Wizard of Odds' analysis of live wheel games (opens in a new tab) gives a house edge for each Dream Catcher number. Applying each one to a hypothetical session of 40 rounds at £1 shows the cost of each choice in pounds.

Dream Catcher: average cost of 40 bets at £1

103.42%96.58%£1.37
207.26%92.74%£2.90
409.19%90.81%£3.68

The 10 is the cheapest spot and the 40 and 5 the dearest. For comparison, single-zero roulette costs 2.70%, or £1.08 on the same £40. Our live game show RTP comparison ranks the wheel bets across every show with published figures, and house edge explained covers the general idea.

How multiplier segments change a money wheel

Multipliers do two things at once. They give back some of the value a plain wheel would keep, by occasionally doubling or multiplying a win by seven, and they make results more uneven, because a lot of the return now sits in rare stacked outcomes. In Dream Catcher, a multiplier spin itself pays nothing and simply carries your bets into the next spin.

Mega Wheel's approach is different: one random segment per round gets a random boost, and it only matters if the wheel stops there. Either way, a multiplier is part of the published return, not a bonus on top of it. The RTP already counts every multiplier the game can produce.

Money wheel myths and what the maths says

Advantages

  • Each spin is independent, so the chances are the same every round.
  • Counting segments gives the true probability of each outcome.
  • The cheaper bets are the ones with the lower published house edge.
  • A long gap without the 40 or a multiplier is normal variation.

Drawbacks

  • Myth: a number that hasn't landed for a while is due.
  • Myth: the presenter's spin strength lets you predict a sector.
  • Myth: covering every number locks in a profit; in fact one bet wins and the rest lose.
  • Myth: a results tracker shows hot and cold numbers worth following.

The belief that a missing number is due is the gambler's fallacy. The wheel has no memory of earlier spins, as our independent events page shows, and betting on every number at once just pays the house edge on each one together.

Live money wheels against RNG wheel games

Live money wheels use a physical wheel spun on camera, with results read into the game software. RNG versions, such as First Person Dream Catcher, use a random number generator and 3D animation instead, and Evolution's 'Go Live' button switches you to the studio game. Check each version's help screen for its own rules and return figures.

Live rounds run on the studio's timetable, which naturally slows play down; RNG rounds run when you choose. Our live casino against RNG games page compares speed and atmosphere, and random number generators explains how RNG results are produced.

UK rules for live money wheel games

Money wheels count as casino games under the Gambling Commission's remote technical standards, not as slots. Since 17 January 2025 that means no autoplay, at least 5 seconds per game cycle, no playing several casino games at once, and a real-time display of net spend and time spent. A re-bet button is allowed. The full list is on our game design rules page.

Online slot stake limits don't apply to money wheels, so stake limits come from the game and casino. You must be 18 or over and verified to play. If you'd like to step away completely, GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) lets you self-exclude from all licensed British online gambling sites in one go.

Frequently asked questions

What are money wheel games?

Money wheel games are live casino games where you bet on which segment a large upright wheel will stop on. Low numbers fill many segments and pay little, while high numbers fill few and pay more. Dream Catcher and Mega Wheel are the best-known pure examples, and shows like Crazy Time add bonus games to the same idea. Our game shows hub lists them all, and Dream Catcher is a good starting point.

What is the best bet on Dream Catcher?

The 10 has the lowest house edge on Dream Catcher at 3.42%, a 96.58% return, according to Wizard of Odds. The 2 and the 1 follow at 4.49% and 4.66%. The 40 is dearest at 9.19%. 'Best' here means cheapest on average, not most likely to win in a session. Compare all the shows on our game show RTP page and see expected value for the maths.

How does Mega Wheel work?

Mega Wheel is Pragmatic Play's live money wheel with 54 numbered segments and nine betting positions. Before each spin a Mega Lucky Number is chosen and given a random Mega Multiplier, which boosts bets on that segment if the wheel stops there. Pragmatic Play says the top win is 500x your bet. We couldn't confirm its RTP, so check the help screen. Our Mega Wheel page has more on the game.

Can you predict where a money wheel will stop?

No, you can't predict a money wheel with any reliability. The presenter's spin varies, the wheel has many segments, and each result is independent of the last. Results history panels show what happened, not what will happen. Believing a number is due is the gambler's fallacy. Our page on can you predict roulette numbers? covers the same question for the roulette wheel.

What happens when Dream Catcher lands on a multiplier?

When Dream Catcher stops on the 2x or 7x segment, nobody is paid on that spin. The presenter spins again and the multiplier applies to the next result. If another multiplier lands, they stack, which is how Evolution says payouts can reach 20,000x. Landing on either multiplier is a 2 in 54 chance, about 3.70%. Read our Dream Catcher guide and multiplier entry for more.

Is a money wheel better value than roulette?

Usually not, because single-zero roulette has a 2.70% house edge while Dream Catcher's bets range from 3.42% to 9.19%. On £40 staked that's £1.08 at roulette against £1.37 to £3.68 on Dream Catcher. You might prefer the wheel for its pace or style, but it costs more on average. See roulette house edge and casino games with the best odds for wider comparisons.

Does covering every number on a money wheel work?

No, covering every number means one bet wins on most spins, but that's not a profit. All the other bets lose, and the combined result carries the house edge of each bet you placed. On Dream Catcher a multiplier spin also pays nothing until the re-spin. It just makes each round cost more on average. Our betting systems page and house edge guide explain why spreading stakes can't remove the edge.

Are there money wheel games without a live host?

Yes, some money wheels have RNG versions without a presenter, such as First Person Dream Catcher from Evolution. Results come from a random number generator with 3D animation, and a 'Go Live' button takes you to the studio game. UK rules on autoplay and game speed apply to both. Our First Person games guide and live against RNG comparison explain the differences.
