Lightning Storm (Evolution) explained
Lightning Storm is Evolution's live game show built on a 39-segment DigiWheel with five bonus games, launched on 31 July 2024. You bet on where the wheel stops; 20 bonus symbols land on random segments each spin, some with 2x to 50x multipliers, and the top bonus can pay 20,000x. Here is how each part works and what it costs.
Key takeaways
- Evolution launched Lightning Storm on 31 July 2024, after showing it at ICE 2024.
- The 39-segment DigiWheel feeds five bonus games: Hot Spot, Monster Mash, Battery Charger, Fireball and Lightning Storm.
- Four bonuses are capped at 10,000x and the Lightning Storm bonus at 20,000x.
- Only players with a bet on the matching bonus spot can win in that bonus round.
- Evolution's game page gives no RTP, so check the help screen before you bet.

Lightning Storm (Evolution): the short version
Lightning Storm is a money-wheel show from Evolution, set in a dark, mad-scientist laboratory. Instead of a mechanical wheel it uses a 39-segment DigiWheel. During each spin the game drops 20 bonus symbols onto random numbered segments, and some of those symbols pick up an extra multiplier. If the wheel stops on a segment with a bonus symbol you have backed, you go into that bonus game; if it stops on a plain winning segment, you are paid straight away.
Evolution calls it its biggest and most ambitious live game show so far. Evolution's launch announcement (opens in a new tab) dates the release to 31 July 2024, following a premiere at ICE 2024. It takes the 'lightning' idea from Lightning Roulette, random multipliers struck before the result, and pairs it with a bonus structure closer to Crazy Time.
How a Lightning Storm round plays out
Evolution's Lightning Storm game page (opens in a new tab) sets out the order of events. Knowing it helps you see exactly where your money goes in each round.
- Place chips on one or more bet spots for where you expect the DigiWheel to stop, before betting closes.
- The host spins the wheel.
- While it spins, 20 bonus symbols are generated on random numbered segments.
- Some of those bonus segments also receive a random multiplier between 2x and 50x.
- The flapper shows the winning segment.
- A plain winning segment pays at once; a numbered segment carrying a bonus symbol you backed sends you into that bonus game.
- Everyone can watch the bonus, but only players with a bet on that bonus spot take part and can win.
Evolution's page refers to a payouts section for the instant-win segments but doesn't publish the values or the number of each segment type. Read the paytable in the game.
Storm Chaser and X Chaser: the two special bets
Lightning Storm adds two bet types on top of the normal spots. Both are shortcuts for placing chips rather than ways to change the odds.
| Bet | What it does | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Storm Chaser | Adds a chip to the spot where the Lightning Storm bonus symbol lands, so you are in that bonus if the wheel stops there; it adds to any bet already on that spot | An extra chip each round |
| X Chaser | Automatically covers spots that got both a bonus symbol and a multiplier on the initial spin | Extra chips on whichever spots qualify |
Each extra chip carries the game's edge, so these bets raise the total you stake each round. They make it easier to follow the bonuses; they don't make the bonuses cheaper to reach.
The five Lightning Storm bonus games
Each bonus has its own mechanic and cap. Any multiplier attached to the bonus symbol on the initial spin boosts the bonus's multipliers before it starts, which is how the biggest wins come about.
| Bonus | How it works | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| Hot Spot | A wall of 108 tiles (9 by 12) with hidden, shuffled multipliers; you pick a tile, then a 3 by 3 area moves round and doubles what it stops on | 10,000x |
| Monster Mash | Three reels (head, torso, legs) each give a multiplier; regular values add, global values multiply the total | 10,000x |
| Battery Charger | Ten batteries on a belt (nine regular, one global); a mini wheel decides whether each battery explodes, pays, or doubles the rest | 10,000x |
| Fireball | A ball drops into one of 149 pockets; a regular pocket ends the round, a double pocket doubles all regular values and relaunches | 10,000x |
| Lightning Storm | A billboard of eight regular and three global multipliers; you choose one of three lightning strikes and its total is your win | 20,000x |
Reading the bonus maths
A few of these bonuses can be put into numbers from the published rules. In Hot Spot you choose 1 of 108 tiles, and the 3 by 3 doubling area covers 9 of them, a twelfth of the wall, at any one moment. In the Lightning Storm bonus you pick one strike out of three before any is revealed, so the choice itself carries no skill: each strike is equally likely to be the best of the three. Monster Mash shows why global multipliers matter: Evolution's example of 10, 10 and 5 as regular values gives 25x, while the same reels with x10 and x5 as global multipliers on the torso and head give 500x.
Lightning Storm odds: what the 39 segments tell you
The DigiWheel has 39 segments, so any single segment comes up 1 time in 39, about 2.56% of spins. A spot represented on several segments wins more often in proportion: three segments would be 3 in 39 (7.69%), ten would be 10 in 39 (25.6%). Evolution doesn't publish the full layout, so check the help screen for how many segments each spot covers.
Bonus entry is harder to pin down, because the 20 bonus symbols land on random numbered segments each spin. That means a spot's bonus chance changes round to round, and no published figure gives the long-run trigger rate. What is clear is the structure: for you to play a bonus, the wheel has to stop on a segment that carries a symbol you are betting on. Our page on probability shows how to combine chances like these.
| Spins | Chance one particular segment never lands | Chance it lands at least once |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 59.5% | 40.5% |
| 39 | 36.3% | 63.7% |
| 100 | 7.4% | 92.6% |
Each figure is (38 ÷ 39) raised to the number of spins. Even across 39 spins, roughly one session in three sees a particular segment miss completely. That is variance at work, not a sign that the segment is due.
Lightning Storm RTP and the house edge
Evolution's game page doesn't state Lightning Storm's RTP, and we haven't found a verified figure, so open the help screen in the game and read the return for each bet before playing. On a show like this, part of the RTP is paid through rare bonus rounds and multipliers, so the instant payouts on plain segments are set lower than they would be on a simple wheel.
The practical sum is always the same: expected loss = stake × house edge. If the help screen showed a 4% edge on a spot, a £2 bet would cost 8p a round on average, or £3.20 over 40 rounds. If it showed 6%, the same stake would cost 12p a round and £4.80 over 40. These are illustrations, so put in the real figure once you have it.
How to play Lightning Storm online in the UK
- Open the game from a UK-licensed casino's live lobby and note the minimum and maximum stakes.
- Read the help screen for the paytable, the segment layout and the return for each spot.
- Set a budget for the session and use the casino's deposit limit tool if you haven't already.
- Place chips on the spots you want before betting closes, adding Storm Chaser or X Chaser only if you are happy to stake the extra.
- Watch the bonus symbols and multipliers land during the spin, then the result.
- If you enter a bonus, make any choice the bonus asks for (a tile in Hot Spot, a strike in Lightning Storm) within the time allowed.
Who Lightning Storm suits, and who it doesn't
Advantages
- Five different bonus mechanics keep rounds varied.
- Published caps (10,000x and 20,000x) tell you the ceiling of each bonus.
- Simple main bet: no decisions until a bonus starts.
- You can watch every bonus even without a stake on it.
Drawbacks
- No RTP on Evolution's public page, so value is hard to compare without the help screen.
- Bonus trigger chances move every round and aren't published.
- High volatility: long runs without a bonus are normal.
- Special bets make it easy to stake more per round than intended.
If you want lower swings, a plain wheel such as Dream Catcher or a table game with a published edge is easier to budget. Our game show RTP comparison lines up the figures that developers do publish.
Lightning Storm myths and strategy claims
- A bonus is 'due' after a long gap. Bonus symbols are placed at random each spin; a dry spell has no effect on the next round. See independent events.
- Backing every bonus spot is a strategy. It raises your stake per round. Each chip still carries the edge, so the average cost rises with it.
- The 20,000x figure is the typical bonus win. It is the cap for the top bonus. Most bonus rounds pay far less, which is why caps sit so far above everyday results.
- The host or studio decides who wins. The DigiWheel and bonus results are produced by the game system in a licensed studio; see are live casino games rigged?
UK rules for Lightning Storm and other live shows
Lightning Storm counts as a casino game, not an online slot, under Gambling Commission rules. So the £5 and £2 slot stake limits don't apply, but the game design rules in RTS 14 (opens in a new tab) do: at least 5 seconds from the start of one game cycle to the next, no feature that speeds up the result, no celebrating a return equal to or below your stake, and no playing several games at once. Autoplay has been banned on all online casino games, live ones included, since 17 January 2025, and casinos must show your net spend and time played as you go.
You need to be 18 or over with your age and identity verified before you can deposit. Credit cards can't be used. Frequently asked questions
When did Lightning Storm launch?
Evolution launched Lightning Storm on 31 July 2024, after premiering it at the ICE 2024 trade show earlier that year. Evolution described it as its biggest and most ambitious live game show. It joined a Lightning family that started with Lightning Roulette, which Evolution's timeline dates to 2018. For more on the series, read our Lightning live casino games guide or the Evolution provider page.
What is the maximum win on Lightning Storm?
The Lightning Storm bonus game can pay up to 20,000x, while Hot Spot, Monster Mash, Battery Charger and Fireball are each capped at 10,000x, according to Evolution's game page. Those caps are reached only when large multipliers from the initial spin combine with the best bonus results, so they are rare. Table limits and any casino payout cap also apply. Our volatility page explains why games with big caps feel so streaky, and the game show RTP page compares shows.
What is the RTP of Lightning Storm?
Evolution doesn't publish Lightning Storm's RTP on its public game page, and we haven't verified a figure, so check the help screen in the game. That screen should list the return for each bet. Once you have it, 100% minus the RTP gives the house edge, and stake times edge gives your average cost per round. Our RTP vs house edge guide shows the conversion, and theoretical loss shows it over a session.
How many segments are on the Lightning Storm wheel?
Lightning Storm uses a 39-segment DigiWheel. Any single segment lands 1 time in 39, about 2.56% of spins. During each spin, 20 bonus symbols are placed on random numbered segments, and some receive 2x to 50x multipliers, so the chance of hitting a bonus you have backed changes from round to round. Check the help screen for the segment layout. Our probability basics page explains the counting method used here.
What does the Storm Chaser bet do?
Storm Chaser adds a chip to the spot where the Lightning Storm bonus symbol lands, so you are entered into that bonus if the wheel stops there. If you already have a bet on that spot, the two are added together. It doesn't change the odds of the wheel stopping there; it just makes sure you have a stake on the right spot. Each extra chip carries the house edge. See our house edge explainer and game show strategy page.
Can you play every Lightning Storm bonus round?
You can watch every Lightning Storm bonus, but you can only win in one if you had a bet on that bonus spot when the wheel stopped there. Players without a stake on it see the round but aren't paid. That is the same rule used in Crazy Time, and it is why many players spread chips across bonus spots, which raises the total staked each round. Our how game shows work guide explains the format.
Is Lightning Storm the same as Lightning Roulette?
No, Lightning Storm is a money-wheel game show, while Lightning Roulette is a roulette table with random Lucky Number multipliers. They share the lightning theme and the idea of random multipliers struck before the result. Lightning Roulette pays unboosted straight-up wins at 29 to 1 and boosts one to five numbers by 50x to 500x. Lightning Storm adds five separate bonus games. Read our Lightning Roulette page to compare.
Does autoplay work on Lightning Storm in the UK?
No, autoplay isn't allowed on Lightning Storm for UK players, because the Gambling Commission banned autoplay on all online casino games, live casino included, from 17 January 2025. A re-bet button that repeats your previous stake is still allowed, since you press it each round yourself. Non-slot casino games must also allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle. Our UK rules for live casino page and the autoplay question cover the background.
