Fishing slots
Fishing slots are reel games where a fisherman, angler or other collector scoops up fish carrying cash values, usually during free spins. The UK market is dominated by Reel Kingdom's Big Bass family and Blueprint Gaming's Fishin' Frenzy and Big Catch games, with RTPs from 95% to 96.71%. Here's how they compare.

- Max wins vary tenfold within one series, from 2,100x to 20,000x stake.

How fishing slots work
Strip away the boats and tackle boxes and nearly every fishing slot runs on the same engine. Fish symbols land on the reels showing a cash value, usually a multiple of your stake. On their own they pay nothing in the bonus round. When a fisherman wild lands on the same spin, it reels in the value of every fish on screen. Collecting enough fishermen typically retriggers the free spins and raises a multiplier on everything collected afterwards.
Reel Kingdom, the studio behind the Big Bass series and distributed by Pragmatic Play, lists the fisherman collect as its signature mechanic. Its breakthrough game, Big Bass Bonanza, launched on 14 December 2020, and the design has since been copied, reskinned and stretched into dozens of versions. You'll find the full family on our Big Bass series page; this page takes the wider view across studios and sits under our slot themes section.
- Spin the base game at your chosen stake; fish money symbols may appear but the base game pays on normal lines.
- Land the required number of scatter symbols to trigger free spins (the count varies by game, so check the paytable).
- During free spins, any fisherman wild collects the cash value of every fish visible on that spin.
- Each fisherman collected moves a meter along; filling it usually adds more spins and a higher multiplier.
- When the spins run out, the collected total is paid, up to the game's max win cap.
Fishing slots compared: RTP, volatility and max win
The figures below come from our checked slot data. RTP is the developer's top version; several of these games also exist at lower settings, which a casino may choose to run instead.
| Slot | Developer | RTP | Volatility | Max win |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big Bass Bonanza | Reel Kingdom | 96.71% | High | 2,100x |
| Bigger Bass Bonanza | Reel Kingdom | 96.71% (lower versions exist) | High | 4,000x |
| Big Bass Splash | Reel Kingdom | 96.71% | High | 5,000x |
| Big Bass Bonanza Megaways | Reel Kingdom | 96.7% | Very high | 4,000x |
| Big Bass Hold & Spinner Megaways | Reel Kingdom | 96.70% (lower versions exist) | Check help screen | 20,000x |
| Big Bass Bonanza 1000 | Reel Kingdom | 96.51% | High | 20,000x |
| Big Bass Amazon Xtreme | Reel Kingdom | 96.07% (lower versions exist) | Very high | 10,000x |
| Big Bass Hold & Spinner | Reel Kingdom | 96.07% | Very high | 10,000x |
| Fishin' Frenzy | Blueprint Gaming | 96.12% | Medium | 5,000x |
| Fishin' Frenzy Megaways | Blueprint Gaming | 96.10% (95.02% also quoted) | High | 10,000x |
| The Big Catch | Blueprint Gaming | 95.32% | Check help screen | Check help screen |
| Even Bigger Catch | Blueprint Gaming | 95% (93% version exists) | Check help screen | 10,000x |
Two patterns stand out. Reel Kingdom's older titles cluster at 96.71%, while its later 'Xtreme' and Hold & Spinner releases drop to 96.07% in exchange for higher caps. Blueprint's games sit lower on RTP, with Even Bigger Catch the most expensive here at 95%.
The Big Bass slots: one idea, many versions
The original Big Bass Bonanza is a 5x3 game with 10 paylines, a 96.71% RTP, high volatility and a modest 2,100x cap. Bigger Bass Bonanza (2021) adds a fourth row and 12 fixed lines and doubles the cap to 4,000x at the same RTP. Big Bass Splash keeps the 10-line shape with a 5,000x ceiling.
Later games push the ceiling much higher. Big Bass Bonanza 1000 lifts it to 20,000x at 96.51%. Big Bass Hold & Spinner and Big Bass Amazon Xtreme both reach 10,000x and are rated very high volatility. Big Bass Bonanza – Keeping it Reel (2022) also caps at 10,000x, with free spins where fisherman wilds collect fish prizes and upgrade multipliers, as summarised in this OLBG game listing (opens in a new tab).
Reel Kingdom has also taken the theme on Megaways reels. Big Bass Bonanza Megaways offers up to 46,656 ways (the same as six reels each showing six symbols: 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6), while Big Bass Hold & Spinner Megaways goes up to 147,456 ways with a 20,000x cap.
Seasonal and spin-off versions
The fisherman has been dressed up for every occasion. Christmas Big Bass Bonanza swaps him for a Santa wild with multipliers up to 10x, Big Bass Halloween 2 adds a wild progress bar and optional modifiers, and Big Bass Day at the Races uses punter wilds with multipliers rising up to 50x. Big Bass Secrets of the Golden Lake lets you pick between classic free spins and a Golden Lake version.
Blueprint's fishing slots: Fishin' Frenzy and the Big Catch games
Blueprint Gaming, based in Newark and owned by Merkur Group, had fishing games on the market before Big Bass existed, as the Megaways version below shows. Fishin' Frenzy is a 5x3, 10-line game with a 96.12% RTP and a 5,000x cap. Unusually for the theme it is rated medium volatility, so wins tend to arrive more evenly than in Reel Kingdom's very high titles.
Fishin' Frenzy Megaways arrived in April 2019 with up to 15,625 ways, high volatility and a 10,000x cap. Its RTP is quoted at 96.10% by some listings and 95.02% by another, which is a reminder that the version matters: over £100 staked, that gap is £3.90 against £4.98 in average losses.
The Big Catch runs at 95.32% on 10 lines, and its sequel Even Bigger Catch (February 2023) publishes 95% with a 93% version also available, alongside a 10,000x cap. On RTP these are the costliest fishing slots in our data.
Fishing slot max wins in pounds
A max win is a multiple of your stake, so its pound value depends entirely on what you bet. It is also a ceiling: the game stops paying once you reach it, and very few sessions come close.
| Max win | Example game | At 10p | At 50p | At £2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2,100x | Big Bass Bonanza | £210 | £1,050 | £4,200 |
| 5,000x | Big Bass Splash | £500 | £2,500 | £10,000 |
| 10,000x | Big Bass Hold & Spinner | £1,000 | £5,000 | £20,000 |
| 20,000x | Big Bass Bonanza 1000 | £2,000 | £10,000 | £40,000 |
A higher cap usually comes with higher volatility and sometimes a lower RTP, as the Big Bass table shows. That means more of the game's return is packed into rare large results and less into everyday wins. Our explainer on max win caps covers how the cap is applied.
Which fishing slots suit a small budget
If you want your stake to last, start with the medium-volatility Fishin' Frenzy or the original Big Bass Bonanza, whose low 2,100x cap leaves more of its 96.71% return for smaller wins. The very high titles, such as Amazon Xtreme and Hold & Spinner, can go a long time without a feature. Our volatility guide and the high against low volatility comparison explain why.
The average cost is the same idea everywhere: total staked times the house edge. At 96.71%, every £100 of spins costs £3.29 on average; at 96.07% it's £3.93; at 95% it's £5. The ranking by cost is therefore Reel Kingdom's 96.71% originals first and Even Bigger Catch last.
Sea and ocean slots without the fisherman
Some players searching for fishing slots really want the underwater setting. These games share the water but not the collect mechanic:
- Great Blue (Playtech, 2013): 5x3, 25 paylines, 96.03% RTP, high volatility.
- Release the Kraken (Pragmatic Play): 5x4, 20 paylines rising to 40 in free spins, 96.50%, up to 10,000x.
- Lord of the Ocean (Novomatic, 2008): 5x3, 10 paylines, 95.1%, high volatility.
- Dolphin's Pearl Deluxe (Novomatic, 2009): 5x3, 10 paylines, 95.13%, high volatility.
There is also a live-dealer option. Evolution's Ice Fishing is a game show with a 53-section wheel and three bonus modes, which the developer says offers up to 5,000x, according to its Ice Fishing launch announcement (opens in a new tab). It is a live game, not a slot, so slot stake limits don't apply to it.
UK rules for fishing slots online
Every fishing slot on a UK-licensed site follows the same Gambling Commission rules:
| Rule | What it means | In force since |
|---|---|---|
| £5 maximum stake | Players aged 25 and over | 9 April 2025 |
| £2 maximum stake | Players aged 18 to 24 | 21 May 2025 |
| No autoplay | Each spin must be started by hand | 31 October 2021 |
| 2.5-second minimum | No turbo or slam-stop | 31 October 2021 |
| No feature buys | Feature buy-ins are not offered to British players | January 2020 warning |
The stake limits are explained in the Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) and on our slot stake limits page. Our page on the autoplay ban covers why each spin now needs a fresh press.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best fishing slot?
It depends on what you value. On published RTP, Big Bass Bonanza, Bigger Bass Bonanza and Big Bass Splash share the top figure of 96.71%. For gentler swings, Blueprint's Fishin' Frenzy is rated medium volatility. For the highest ceiling, Big Bass Bonanza 1000 and Big Bass Hold & Spinner Megaways list 20,000x stake. None of them pays back more than you stake on average. Compare the full specs in our slot reviews.
What is the RTP of Big Bass Bonanza?
Big Bass Bonanza publishes a 96.71% RTP, which means an average loss of about £3.29 for every £100 staked over the long run. It is a 5x3 slot with 10 paylines, high volatility and a 2,100x maximum win. Some casinos may run lower certified versions of Reel Kingdom games, so check the help screen. Our Big Bass Bonanza review covers the specs, and the RTP explainer shows how the figure works.
How does the fisherman feature work in fishing slots?
The fisherman is a wild that collects the cash value shown on every fish symbol visible on the same spin, usually only during free spins. Collecting fishermen fills a meter that typically adds extra spins and a higher multiplier to later collections. The exact rules, including how many scatters trigger the round and how high multipliers go, differ between games, so read the paytable. Our free spins feature guide explains how bonus rounds are triggered.
Which fishing slot has the highest max win?
In our checked data, Big Bass Bonanza 1000 and Big Bass Hold & Spinner Megaways share the top cap of 20,000 times the stake. At 10p that is £2,000, and at the £2 maximum stake for under-25s it is £40,000. Reaching a cap is a very rare outcome, and games with high caps tend to be more volatile. Our page on what a slot's max win means explains the figure.
Is Fishin' Frenzy the same as Big Bass Bonanza?
No. Fishin' Frenzy is made by Blueprint Gaming, while Big Bass Bonanza comes from Reel Kingdom and is distributed by Pragmatic Play. Both use a fishing theme on 5x3 reels with 10 paylines, but Fishin' Frenzy publishes a 96.12% RTP and is rated medium volatility, against 96.71% and high volatility for Big Bass Bonanza. Their caps differ too: 5,000x against 2,100x. See our Fishin' Frenzy review for its full specs.
Can I use free spins on fishing slots?
Sometimes, depending on the offer. PlayOJO's welcome offer gives 80 free spins at 10p specifically on Big Bass Bonanza for new UK customers who deposit £10 or more (18+, excluding Northern Ireland, no wagering). Coral and Ladbrokes give spins on selected slots chosen by the casino, so a fishing game may or may not be included. Always read the terms. Our free spins guide explains how spin offers work and what they're worth.
Are fishing slots high volatility?
Most of them are. The majority of Reel Kingdom's Big Bass games are rated high or very high volatility, which means long gaps between features and occasional large collections. Fishin' Frenzy is the main exception, rated medium, and the original Big Bass Bonanza's low 2,100x cap keeps its swings smaller than later sequels. Choose a lower stake on very high titles so your budget lasts. Our volatility page explains what the ratings mean.
Why are there so many Big Bass slots?
Because the original was a hit, Reel Kingdom has reused its fisherman collect engine in many sequels, seasonal versions and spin-offs. Each changes the layout, cap, RTP or modifiers rather than the core idea. Newer versions tend to trade RTP for higher caps, so Amazon Xtreme publishes 96.07% with a 10,000x cap against the original's 96.71% and 2,100x. Our Big Bass series page lists the family in full.
