Play'n GO slots come from an independent, privately held Swedish studio in Växjö whose first gaming product dates from 1997, and whose hits include Book of Dead, Reactoonz and Legacy of Dead. Its library runs to several hundred games. This guide covers the studio, its Rich Wilde and grid series, what their RTPs cost per hour and the UK rules.

Key takeaways

About Play'n GO, the studio

Play'n GO is a Swedish slot developer headquartered in Växjö. It traces its roots to 1997, when it built its first gaming product, and it has stayed independent and privately held while many rivals were bought by larger groups. Its catalogue now runs to several hundred games.

Independence is worth a sentence because it sets Play'n GO apart from studios such as NetEnt, which sits inside Evolution, or Quickspin, owned by Playtech. Ownership does not change a game's maths, but it does explain why Play'n GO's catalogue has its own consistent style: recurring characters, a familiar paytable layout and a cap that appears again and again. Our slot providers hub lists the other studios we cover.

Play'n GO slots list: RTP, volatility and max win

These are the Play'n GO games we review. Where the RTP is marked as the top version, the studio also supplies lower settings that a casino can choose instead.

Two patterns jump out. First, almost everything is rated high volatility, with Fire Joker the medium exception. Second, 5,000x is the ceiling on six of the twelve games, with Moon Princess 100 the outlier at 15,000x. Our explainer on what a max win cap means shows how to read these figures.

The Rich Wilde slots and Play'n GO's book games

Rich Wilde, a treasure-hunting adventurer, is Play'n GO's recurring character and the thread through several of its best-known games. Book of Dead is the most famous: an Egyptian, 10-line book slot with high volatility and a 5,000x cap. Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness moves him to a 5x5 cluster-pays grid with a lower 2,000x cap, and Rich Wilde and the Pearls of India (2014) is a medium-volatility, 20-line game with Pearl free spins that carry multipliers and a Golden Temple bonus opened by collecting symbols.

Book of Dead also sits in a wider family of book-style games, which our book slots page and adventure slots page explore. It is often compared with Novomatic's Book of Ra Deluxe, and on price Book of Dead is cheaper: 96.21% against 95.1%, which works out at about 3.8p against 4.9p per £1 staked on average.

On paper, Legacy of Dead returns 37p more per £100 staked than Book of Dead, with the same cap and volatility label. That is small per session but a fair tie-breaker if you like the style.

Play'n GO grid slots: Reactoonz, Moon Princess and Gigantoonz

The other side of the catalogue is grid games. Reactoonz and Reactoonz 2 use a 7x7 grid where five or more touching symbols form a win, the cluster pays system. Gigantoonz grows the grid to 8x8 and adds cascading reels, so winning clusters clear and new symbols fall in. Moon Princess and Rise of Olympus use 5x5 grids where three or more matching symbols in a row or column pay.

Grid games feel busier than line slots because a single spin can chain several wins, but the caps are no higher: Reactoonz tops out at 4,570x and Gigantoonz at 4,000x. The busy screen is presentation; the RTP and volatility are what decide the cost. Rise of Olympus brings the same grid idea to a Greek mythology theme.

What Play'n GO slots cost per hour

A useful way to compare slots is the average cost of an hour's play. Multiply spins per hour by stake to get the total staked, then multiply by the house edge. UK rules mean a spin takes at least 2.5 seconds, so 1,440 spins an hour is the absolute maximum; the table assumes a steadier 300 spins at 20p, or £60 staked.

Legacy of Dead96.58%3.42%£2.05
Reactoonz96.51%3.49%£2.09
Book of Dead96.21%3.79%£2.27
Fire Joker96.15%3.85%£2.31
A 94% setting, for comparison94%6%£3.60

The four named games sit within about 26p of each other on average. The bigger difference is volatility. Fire Joker's medium rating and 800x cap mean a smoother ride, while the high-volatility games can swallow a session budget well before the hour is up and then, rarely, pay back many times over. The last row shows why the RTP version matters more than the choice between these titles. Our cost per hour guide covers other games.

Play'n GO RTP versions: reading the help screen

Several of the RTPs above are labelled top version because Play'n GO supplies more than one setting, and the casino picks. Before you play, check which one you have.

  1. Open the game and select the information or paytable button.
  2. Scroll to the game rules and find the theoretical RTP statement.
  3. Compare it with the top-version figure in our table.
  4. Check the stated maximum win, as some games limit total payouts per round.
  5. Choose your stake so your budget covers enough spins for the game's volatility.
  6. Set a deposit or loss limit in your account before you start.

Our question page on why the same slot can have different RTPs explains how this works, and the Wizard of Odds slots page (opens in a new tab) discusses how slot returns vary between markets.

Play'n GO slot myths, corrected

  • "Book of Dead is due a bonus after a dry spell." Every spin is independent, and past spins have no effect on the next one. See do online slots have memory.
  • "Higher stakes raise the RTP." The RTP is fixed by the version the casino runs, not by your stake.
  • "Grid slots pay more because they chain wins." Chained wins are part of the same RTP; Reactoonz returns 96.51%, much like a line slot.
  • "A 5,000x cap means 5,000x is likely." The cap is a ceiling reached in a tiny share of play.

UK rules for Play'n GO slots online

  • Stakes: £5 a spin maximum from 9 April 2025 for players aged 25 and over, and £2 from 21 May 2025 for 18 to 24-year-olds, as the Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets out. At £5, a 5,000x cap would be £25,000; at 20p, £1,000.
  • Design: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, at least 2.5 seconds a spin and no celebrating returns at or below your stake, under RTS 14 (opens in a new tab). Our autoplay ban page explains why.
  • Feature buys: since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players.
  • Visibility: net spend and time played appear on screen during your session; see our game design rules page.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Play'n GO?

Play'n GO is independent and privately held, rather than part of a larger listed group. It is headquartered in Växjö, Sweden, and dates its first gaming product to 1997. That sets it apart from studios such as NetEnt, owned by Evolution, and Quickspin, owned by Playtech. Ownership does not change how a game pays, but it explains the studio's consistent style. Our slot providers hub compares the ownership of the studios we cover.

What is the RTP of Book of Dead?

Book of Dead has a published RTP of 96.21%, which means an average cost of about 3.8p for every £1 staked over the long run. It is a high-volatility, 10-payline slot with a 5,000x cap, so real sessions swing widely around that average. Casinos can run lower settings of some Play'n GO games, so confirm the figure in the help screen. Our Book of Dead review has the full details.

What is the highest RTP Play'n GO slot?

Among the Play'n GO slots we cover, Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness has the highest top-version RTP at 96.59%, with Legacy of Dead and Rise of Merlin close behind at 96.58%. The gap is tiny: about 1p per £100 staked. The version your casino runs matters far more, since a lower setting can cost two or more points extra. Our RTP explainer shows how to turn any figure into pounds.

Who is Rich Wilde?

Rich Wilde is Play'n GO's recurring treasure-hunting adventurer, who appears across a series of its slots. The best known is Book of Dead, set in ancient Egypt, while Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness moves him to a cluster-pays grid and Rich Wilde and the Pearls of India, from 2014, is a medium-volatility game. The character links the games, but each has its own RTP and rules. Our adventure slots page covers similar themes.

Is Reactoonz high volatility?

Yes, Reactoonz is rated high volatility, with a 96.51% RTP and a 4,570x cap on a 7x7 cluster-pays grid. Wins form when five or more matching symbols touch, and chained wins can make the screen busy, but long quiet spells are still normal. Reactoonz 2 is also high volatility, with a 5,083x cap and a top-version RTP of 96.2%. Our Reactoonz review explains how the grid works.

Which Play'n GO slot is best for a small budget?

Fire Joker is the gentlest Play'n GO slot we cover, rated medium volatility with a 96.15% RTP, a 3x3 layout, 5 paylines and an 800x cap. That profile tends to make a small budget last longer than the studio's high-volatility games, although no slot can promise that. At 10p a spin, 200 spins cost about 77p on average. Set your budget first. Our low stakes guide has more ideas.

Can I play Play'n GO slots for free in the UK?

You can sometimes play demo versions of Play'n GO slots at UK casinos, but only after age verification, because UK rules apply age checks to free-to-play games as well. A demo uses the same maths as the real game, so it shows how volatile a title feels without staking money. It cannot predict real results, because every spin is independent. Our demo play guide explains what to expect.
