Casino VIP schemes UK
Casino VIP schemes in the UK are invitation-only programmes for a casino’s highest-spending customers, usually with a personal account manager and tailored rewards. Since 31 October 2020 the Gambling Commission has required casinos to check that a VIP’s spending is affordable and sustainable, and to look for signs of harm, before and during membership.
Key takeaways
- VIP status is by invitation and is based on how much you stake, so it reflects cost, not skill.
- Since 31 October 2020 casinos must confirm VIP spending is affordable and check for harm before and during membership.
- A senior manager holding a personal licence must oversee each VIP scheme.
- VIP perks don’t lift the £5 slot stake limit (£2 for 18–24s) or the 10x wagering cap.
- At £5 a spin and 500 spins an hour on a 96% slot, the expected cost is about £100 an hour.
- Who gets in
- Invitation only, high-spending customers
- VIP rules in force

- £5 (25+) or £2 (18–24) per spin
What casino VIP schemes are
A VIP scheme, which the Gambling Commission calls a high-value customer scheme, sits above a casino’s ordinary loyalty scheme. Membership is by invitation. The usual features are a named account manager, tailored rewards or bonuses, and faster contact with the casino.
The invitation follows spending. Casinos pick VIPs from the customers who stake the most, because those customers generate the most expected revenue. That is the plain reason the schemes exist, and it’s worth keeping in mind whenever a VIP offer arrives.
For other offers aimed at bigger stakes, see our guide to the high roller bonus and the full range on the casino bonuses hub.
Why UK VIP schemes face strict rules
The Commission announced new rules on 30 September 2020, saying it wanted to stamp out irresponsible VIP practices. The rules took effect on 31 October 2020 and were added through the incentive provisions of its social responsibility code.
The idea is simple. VIP rewards are designed to keep high-spending customers playing, and some of those customers may be spending money they can’t afford. The rules put the burden on the casino to check first and keep checking, rather than reward spending without asking where it comes from. The Commission’s news release on the VIP rules (opens in a new tab) and its high-value customer guidance (opens in a new tab) set out the reasoning.
| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| 30 September 2020 | Commission announces new VIP rules |
| 31 October 2020 | VIP rules in force: affordability, harm checks, senior oversight |
| 12 February 2023 | Marketing and new bonus take-up must stop on strong signs of harm |
| 28 February 2025 | Financial vulnerability checks when net deposits pass £150 in 30 days |
| 9 April 2025 | £5 maximum stake per online slot spin for adults 25 and over |
| 21 May 2025 | £2 maximum stake per online slot spin for 18–24s |
| 19 January 2026 | 10x wagering cap and one-product rule for all incentives |
What a UK casino must do before making you a VIP
Under the 2020 rules and guidance, a casino can’t simply hand out VIP status to whoever spends most. Before it does, and while you remain a member, it has specific duties.
- Affordability. Confirm that your spending is affordable and sustainable.
- Harm and vulnerability. Assess whether there is evidence of gambling harm or that you may be vulnerable.
- Up-to-date evidence. Hold current identity, occupation and source-of-funds information for you.
- Ongoing checks. Keep verifying and keep checking for harm for as long as you are in the scheme.
- Senior oversight. Each scheme must be overseen by a senior executive holding a Personal Management Licence.
These sit on top of duties that apply to every customer: customer interaction systems that spot and act on signs of harm, and financial vulnerability checks once net deposits pass £150 in a rolling 30 days. Full credit-reference affordability assessments were piloted but are not live.
What to expect if you are invited into a casino VIP scheme
Because of those duties, an invitation usually comes with questions. That isn’t a sign of trouble; it is the casino doing what its licence requires.
| Request | Why it is asked |
|---|---|
| Proof of identity and address | Identity must be current and verified |
| Occupation | Part of the evidence the VIP rules require |
| Bank statements or payslips | Anti-money laundering checks on source of funds, and checks that spending is sustainable |
| Explanation of unusual income | For example a house sale, which can explain a spike in deposits |
| Your own spending limits | Part of assessing whether play is affordable |
The Commission’s consumer guidance explains that casinos ask about finances for two reasons: anti-money laundering and social responsibility. Checks can be done directly or through a third party. If you’d rather not share this information, you can decline the invitation; ordinary play under your own limits doesn’t need VIP status.
The real cost of VIP-level play
VIP rewards are paid for by expected losses, and at high stakes those losses add up quickly. The sums are the same cost per hour maths used across this site: stakes per hour × house edge.
| Stake per spin | Spins per hour | Staked per hour | Expected loss per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| £0.50 | 500 | £250 | £10 |
| £1 | 500 | £500 | £20 |
| £2 (max for 18–24s) | 500 | £1,000 | £40 |
| £5 (max for 25+) | 500 | £2,500 | £100 |
Five hundred spins an hour is a round example, well inside the UK’s 2.5-second minimum spin time. Table games are not covered by the slot stake limits, so stakes there can be higher. At £50 a spin on single-zero roulette, 40 spins an hour stakes £2,000 and costs about £54 an hour at a 2.70% edge.
Seen this way, a VIP reward worth a few hundred pounds a month is a small fraction of what that level of play is expected to cost. The theoretical loss page shows how casinos use this figure to size rewards.
UK rules that VIP status doesn’t change
VIP schemes are sometimes imagined as a world without limits. In Great Britain the main protections apply to every customer equally.
- Slot stake limits. £5 a spin for 25 and over, £2 for 18–24s, whatever your status. See online slot stake limits.
- Game speed and design. No autoplay, no turbo, and at least 2.5 seconds per slot spin; see game speed rules.
- Wagering cap. VIP bonuses paid as bonus funds can’t need more than 10x play. See the 10x wagering cap.
- One product per incentive. A VIP reward can’t mix casino with betting or bingo.
- No credit. Credit cards can’t be used to gamble, including through e-wallets funded by a card.
- Harm duties. Strong signs of harm mean marketing and new bonuses must stop, VIP or not.
VIP schemes at our partner casinos
Casinos rarely publish VIP criteria, because invitations are based on individual assessments. Of our five partners, PlayOJO describes its programme most clearly: its help page (opens in a new tab) says OJO Club is invitation-only with an assigned manager, sitting above OJO Levels and daily Kickers.
For Coral, Ladbrokes, Casumo and 10bet, VIP criteria and perks aren’t published in the sources we checked, so we don’t describe them. Each brand’s rewards are covered on our pages for PlayOJO loyalty, Coral loyalty and Ladbrokes loyalty.
How to handle a casino VIP invitation
- Look at your real spending over the last few months: deposits minus withdrawals.
- Ask yourself whether that amount is money you set aside for entertainment and could lose without it mattering.
- Ask the casino what the scheme gives, what it asks of you and what checks it will run.
- Set or review your deposit limits before saying yes; VIP status shouldn’t raise them.
- If the invitation makes you want to spend more to keep the status, decline it.
- You can leave a VIP scheme at any time, and you can ask for VIP marketing to stop.
VIP schemes and gambling harm
High spending and gambling harm can overlap, which is why the rules exist. Warning signs include spending more than you planned, borrowing or using savings to gamble, hiding spending, or feeling that a manager’s contact is pulling you back. Our guide to the signs of problem gambling lists more.
Free, confidential support is available any time. The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare (opens in a new tab), is on 0808 8020 133, 24 hours a day. GAMSTOP blocks all licensed British gambling sites at once, and the NHS runs specialist clinics. See gambling support in the UK.

Frequently asked questions
How do you become a VIP at a UK online casino?
You are invited, usually after staking large amounts over time. Casinos don’t publish exact thresholds. Before granting VIP status, a UK casino must check that your spending is affordable and sustainable, look for signs of harm, and hold current identity, occupation and source-of-funds evidence. Spending more to win an invitation is never a good reason to gamble. See our loyalty schemes guide for rewards open to all players.
Are casino VIP schemes legal in the UK?
Yes, but they have been tightly regulated since 31 October 2020. Casinos must run affordability and harm checks before and during membership, keep evidence up to date, and have a senior manager with a Personal Management Licence oversee each scheme. The rules sit under the Commission’s social responsibility code for incentives. Our page on the LCCP explains how those codes work.
Why does a casino want my bank statements for VIP status?
Because the rules require evidence of where your money comes from and whether your spending is sustainable. The Commission says casinos ask about finances for anti-money laundering reasons and for social responsibility, to spot people gambling money they don’t have. You can decline to provide documents, but the casino may then not offer VIP status. See ID checks for casino withdrawals for related checks.
Do VIPs get higher stake limits on slots?
No. The online slot limits apply to every player in Great Britain: £5 per spin for those aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 for 18–24s since 21 May 2025. VIP status doesn’t change that. The limits don’t cover table games such as roulette and blackjack. Read more on our online slot stake limits page.
Are VIP bonuses exempt from the 10x wagering cap?
No. Since 19 January 2026, SR code 5.1.1 caps bonus wagering at 10 times the bonus for every incentive, including those given to VIPs. The same code bans incentives that mix gambling products. A VIP reward still has to follow clear, fair terms. Our page on the 10x wagering cap covers the details.
Is a casino VIP scheme worth joining?
Only if the spending that earned the invitation is already affordable and planned. VIP rewards are funded by expected losses: at £5 a spin and 500 spins an hour on a 96% slot, the expected cost is about £100 an hour. Rewards return a small part of that. If keeping VIP status would push you to play more, it isn’t worth it. Our cost per hour page shows the maths.
What is PlayOJO’s OJO Club?
OJO Club is PlayOJO’s invitation-only programme, which its help page describes as coming with an assigned manager. It sits above OJO Levels, which only go up, and daily Kickers. PlayOJO doesn’t publish the criteria for joining. As with any UK VIP programme, affordability and harm checks apply. Our PlayOJO loyalty page has more on its rewards.
How do I leave a casino VIP scheme?
Tell your account manager or customer support that you want to leave and that you don’t want VIP marketing. You can also switch off marketing in your account settings, set lower deposit limits, take a time-out or self-exclude. If you want a break from all licensed sites at once, use GAMSTOP. Our GAMSTOP guide explains how it works.
