Casino bonus mistakes to avoid

The most common casino bonus mistakes are paying with an excluded method, missing a claim deadline, breaking the maximum bet and playing games that don't count. Each can cost you the bonus or what it won, and every one is avoidable if you read the key terms before your first deposit rather than after it.

Key takeaways

  • Check the excluded payment methods first: PayPal, Skrill and Neteller deposits miss out on several UK welcome offers.
  • Note every clock: acceptance windows, daily claim cut-offs and wagering deadlines run from different moments.
  • Wagering is capped at 10x the bonus in Great Britain, but 10x a £100 bonus is still £1,000 of bets.
  • Your own deposit can always be withdrawn, even while a bonus is active.
  • Never raise stakes or play longer just to finish wagering: the house edge applies to every bet.

Casino bonus mistakes at a glance

Most lost bonuses come down to a handful of avoidable errors, not bad luck. The table sums up the twelve casino bonus mistakes covered on this page, what each can cost and the simple fix. The detail follows, with real terms from the UK casinos we work with and the Gambling Commission (opens in a new tab) rules that sit behind them. For the wider picture, start at our casino bonuses hub.

Mistake 1: depositing with a method the offer excludes

This is the bonus slip-up that catches out the most people, because it happens before a single spin. Several UK welcome offers exclude e-wallets and prepaid cards from the qualifying deposit. Pay with one of them and the account works normally, but the offer never arrives.

Deposit methods excluded from our partners' welcome offers
OfferExcluded from qualifying
Coral: bet £10, get 100 free spinsNeteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards, certain debit cards
Ladbrokes: play £10, get up to 500 free spinsPrepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill, Moneybookers
10bet: 100% up to £25Skrill and Neteller
Casumo: 50% up to £100Payment restrictions apply; see the offer terms
PlayOJO: 80 free spinsNo named exclusions in our checked terms; check before paying

Exclusions are a significant condition, and UK advertising rules expect them to be prominent. The ASA's guidance on free bets and bonuses (opens in a new tab) records a July 2024 ruling against William Hill Online, where an excluded payment method sat in small print among the full terms and wasn't prominent enough. Even so, the safest habit is yours: read the exclusions line before you open the cashier. Our guide to payment methods excluded from bonuses explains why casinos do it, and the PayPal casinos page covers that method in detail.

Mistake 2: missing claim and expiry deadlines

Bonus terms often run two or three separate clocks. One starts when the spins are credited, another when you accept them, and a third governs how long you have to wager a matched bonus. Mixing them up is an easy way to lose spins you have already paid to qualify for.

The clocks in our partners' offers
OfferClock 1Clock 2
Coral48 hours to accept the spins7 days to use them
LadbrokesClaim each day's 50 spins before 23:59Each batch valid for 7 days
CasumoOpt in to the offer7 days to wager the bonus 10x
10betFirst deposit within 7 days of sign-up3 days to wager the bonus 10x on slots
PlayOJOFirst deposit of £10 or moreSpin deadline shown in your account; check it

Ladbrokes' offer is the one most exposed to this mistake, because it drips out across ten days. Miss a day's 23:59 claim and that day's 50 spins are gone, so the full 500 needs ten separate claims. Our Ladbrokes welcome bonus page walks through the schedule.

Mistake 3: misreading casino bonus wagering requirements

Wagering is the total you must bet before bonus funds turn into withdrawable cash. Since 19 January 2026 the Gambling Commission has capped it at 10 times the bonus (LCCP social responsibility code 5.1.1). The Commission's own announcement of the cap (opens in a new tab) uses the example of a £10 bonus at 50x, which used to mean £500 of play.

The mistake is treating 10x as small. Take Casumo's offer: deposit £200, get the maximum £100 bonus and you must bet £1,000 within 7 days. If the slots you choose return 96% on average (a 4% house edge), the expected cost of that £1,000 of bets is £1,000 × 4% = £40. So the bonus is worth roughly £60 on average, not £100, and any single week can land far above or below that. Our wagering requirements guide and house edge explainer show the formula in full.

Expected cost of wagering at a 4% house edge
BonusWagering at 10xExpected cost at 4%Average value left
£10£100£4£6
£25£250£10£15
£50£500£20£30
£100£1,000£40£60

These are long-run averages. Expected loss equals total stakes multiplied by the house edge, but a short session can finish well above or below it.

Mistake 4: breaking the maximum bet rule

Casumo's terms cap bets at £5 while the bonus is active. Breaking a max bet rule can put bonus winnings at risk, and the Commission's consumer guidance says operators should be clear about bonus play restrictions such as bet size limits. The point for you is simple: once you opt in, every stake has to fit under the cap until the bonus is finished or forfeited.

Two further limits overlap here. Online slots in Great Britain are already capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, under the slot stake limits. Table and live games aren't covered by those legal limits, so the bonus cap is the one that bites there, if the game counts at all. Read what happens if you break the max bet rule for the detail, or our max bet rule guide.

Mistake 5: playing games that don't count towards the bonus

The three spin offers we list are slot offers: Coral's and Ladbrokes' spins land on selected games, and PlayOJO's go on Big Bass Bonanza. 10bet's matched bonus must be wagered on slots. Casumo's comes with game restrictions. Table and live games are often excluded from bonus play or count for less towards wagering, so check the terms before you sit at a blackjack or roulette table with a bonus running.

When a game counts at, say, 10%, a £10 bet clears only £1 of wagering, so £1,000 of wagering would need £10,000 of bets. That is why our game weighting guide matters even to slot players, and why table fans should read can I use a bonus on blackjack before opting in.

Mistake 6: thinking a bonus locks up your own deposit

Plenty of people keep playing because they believe their deposit is trapped until wagering is done. It isn't. Commission guidance on withdrawing deposits (opens in a new tab) says you must be able to withdraw your deposit balance at any time, even while a bonus is pending or active, and wagering requirements can't apply to it. Deposit and bonus balances must be shown separately.

What you may give up by withdrawing is the bonus itself, so read the terms on that point. Our page on withdrawing with a bonus active works through the order of play and what happens to each balance.

Mistakes 7 and 8: eligibility and ID slips

Welcome offers are for new customers, and the definition can be wider than one brand. Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (part of Entain), so holding an account at one may stop you getting a new-customer offer at the other. PlayOJO's welcome offer excludes Northern Ireland, where the Gambling Act 2005 and the Commission's rules don't apply. Opening a second account to claim twice breaks operators' terms; our page on bonus abuse explains how operators define it.

The second slip is leaving identity checks until you want to cash out. UK casinos must verify your age and identity before you can deposit or gamble, bonus play included, so finish age verification at sign-up and the offer can start straight away.

Mistakes 9 and 10: ignoring winnings caps and hunting for codes

10bet's welcome bonus caps bonus winnings at £1,000. Anything won above that from bonus play isn't paid. Spin offers have a built-in limit too, because each spin is worth 10p at all three of our spin partners, which sets the size of any line win. Read the maximum winnings line in the bonus terms before you opt in, not after a lucky session.

Time spent searching for codes is wasted at our partners: none of them needs a promo code, and PlayOJO's offer is available only through its designated offer link. Codes found on unofficial sites can send you to unlicensed casinos, which give you none of the UK's protections. See our bonus codes explainer.

Mistakes 11 and 12: chasing wagering and treating bonuses as income

Raising your stake to finish wagering faster doesn't change the maths. Every bet carries the same house edge, so £1,000 of wagering costs about the same on average whether you place it at 20p or £5, but bigger stakes swing your balance harder and empty it quicker. No staking pattern or game timing improves your chances, as our page on the gambler's fallacy explains.

The last mistake is the most serious: treating a bonus as a way to make money. A bonus lowers the cost of some play, but the house edge means losses are likely over time. Set a deposit limit before you claim, and if you notice yourself playing on to recover losses, read our guide to chasing losses. How to avoid casino bonus mistakes before you deposit

A two-minute check before your first deposit prevents almost every slip on this page. Work through it in order.

  1. Confirm you're eligible: new customer, 18+, in Great Britain, and no account with a sister brand.
  2. Complete ID verification at sign-up so nothing delays the offer.
  3. Read the payment exclusions and pick a method that qualifies.
  4. Write down each deadline: acceptance, daily claims and the wagering window.
  5. Turn any wagering into pounds: bonus × multiplier = total bets.
  6. Note the maximum bet and any cap on bonus winnings.
  7. Check which games count and at what rate.
  8. Set a deposit limit and a session budget you're comfortable losing.

Our partner offers and the slip to watch with each

All three offers below are slot offers for new customers aged 18+, and terms apply. For table or live play, look at each casino's lobby and terms instead, because those games are often excluded from bonuses.

Coral gives 100 free spins at 10p on selected games when you deposit and bet £10 or more on slots between 1 October 2026 and 1 February 2027. Accept them within 48 hours and use them within 7 days; spin winnings carry no wagering. The common slip is the deposit method, since Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don't qualify.

PlayOJO gives 80 free spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza for a first deposit of £10 or more, with no wagering and winnings paid in cash. It excludes Northern Ireland, can't be combined with other offers and works only through the designated offer link.

Ladbrokes gives 50 free spins a day for 10 days, up to 500 at 10p each, once you deposit and spend £10 on slots. Claim each batch before 23:59 and use it within 7 days; there's no wagering. Prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers deposits don't qualify, and Coral and Ladbrokes share an operator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common casino bonus mistake?

Depositing with a payment method the offer excludes is the most common one. Coral and Ladbrokes exclude PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe and prepaid cards from their slot offers, and 10bet excludes Skrill and Neteller. The deposit goes through and you can play, but the bonus never arrives, and it usually can't be added afterwards. Read the exclusions line before you open the cashier. Our guide to payment methods excluded from bonuses explains why the rule exists and which methods are affected most often.

Can I lose my bonus by betting too much?

Yes, breaking a maximum bet rule can put the bonus and its winnings at risk. Casumo, for example, caps bets at £5 while its bonus is active. The cap applies to every single bet until the bonus is finished, and it sits alongside the legal £5 per spin limit on slots for players aged 25 and over, or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. Our max bet rule guide covers how these caps work and what operators must tell you about them in advance.

Do I have to finish wagering before I can withdraw my deposit?

No, your own deposit balance can be withdrawn at any time. Gambling Commission guidance says operators must let you withdraw it even when a bonus is pending or active, and wagering requirements can't be applied to it. What you may lose by withdrawing early is the bonus balance, so read what the terms say about that before you cash out. Our page on withdrawing with a bonus active explains how the two balances work and which one each bet comes from.

Is 10x wagering a good deal?

It's the most a UK casino can now ask, but it still adds up to real money. Since 19 January 2026 wagering can't exceed 10 times the bonus, so a £100 bonus needs £1,000 of bets. At a 4% house edge that costs about £40 on average, leaving the bonus worth roughly £60 in the long run. Whether that suits you depends on whether you'd have played that much anyway. See our 10x wagering cap guide for the rule and our bonus value page for the maths.

Can I use a casino bonus on blackjack or roulette?

Usually only partly, and often not at all, so check the terms first. Our three spin partners give spins on slots, 10bet's matched bonus must be wagered on slots, and Casumo's has game restrictions. Table and live games are often excluded or count for only a fraction of each bet towards wagering, which makes clearing a bonus on them slow. Read can I use a bonus on live casino and our roulette bonus guide before opting in for table play.

Can I claim welcome offers at both Coral and Ladbrokes?

Possibly not, because both brands are run by the same company. LC International Limited, part of Entain, operates Coral and Ladbrokes under one Gambling Commission licence, so an existing account at one may make you ineligible as a new customer at the other. Check each offer's eligibility terms before you sign up, and never open extra accounts to claim twice. Our page on having accounts at several casinos explains what is allowed and what counts as a breach of terms.

Do I need a promo code for a UK casino bonus?

Not at any of our five partner casinos. Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo and 10bet all apply their welcome offers without a code, though Casumo requires you to opt in and PlayOJO's offer works only through its designated link. Sites promising secret codes for bigger bonuses are best ignored, and some point to unlicensed casinos with no UK protection. Our bonus codes explainer covers how codes work where they are used, and how to check that a casino is properly licensed.

What should I do if a casino keeps my bonus winnings?

Ask the casino for a full explanation first, because the rules require one. Commission guidance says that when winnings are taken away you must be told which restriction you broke, and operators can't reserve sole discretion over what counts as a breach. If you disagree, use the casino's complaints process; after 8 weeks without a resolution it must offer you a free alternative dispute resolution service. Our guide to casino complaints and ADR sets out each step in order.
