Deposit match bonus explained

A deposit match bonus adds bonus funds worth a set percentage of your deposit, up to a cap: 100% up to £25 on a £25 deposit gives you £25 extra. Those funds must then be wagered, at most 10 times in the UK since January 2026, before anything they win can be withdrawn, so the match is only part of the story.

Key takeaways

  • The match percentage and the cap decide the bonus; depositing above the cap adds nothing.
  • Wagering is capped at 10x the bonus in the UK, so a £25 bonus needs at most £250 of qualifying bets.
  • Average cost of wagering = amount wagered × house edge; at 4%, a 10x bonus keeps about 60% of its face value.
  • Maximum bets, game weighting and short expiry windows decide whether you can finish the wagering at all.

How a deposit match bonus works

The casino looks at your qualifying deposit, multiplies it by the match percentage and credits the result as bonus funds, up to a stated maximum. A 50% match up to £100 gives £10 on a £20 deposit, £50 on £100 and £100 on £200. Pay in £500 and you still get £100, because the cap has been reached. It's one of the two main shapes of welcome offer on our casino bonuses hub, the other being spins.

You then hold two balances. Your cash balance is your own money, and the Commission's guidance says it must be shown separately from the bonus balance, never as a single pot. The bonus balance is play money with conditions: it has to be wagered a set number of times, within a time limit, under a maximum bet, before any winnings from it become withdrawable.

The Commission's guidance doesn't fix which balance is used first. Some casinos spend your cash before the bonus, others the reverse, and the terms should tell you. It matters because a winning spin made with cash is yours to keep at once, while the same win made with bonus funds is subject to wagering. Our guide to withdrawing with a bonus active explains how this plays out.

The table runs our two partner matched offers at different deposit sizes. The cost of wagering uses an illustrative 4% house edge, roughly a 96% RTP slot; the eligible games' real figures are in their help screens.

Two lessons stand out. The value grows with the bonus, not with the deposit: the £300 Casumo deposit earns nothing more than £200. And the rough value is an average across many players, so plenty will lose the bonus balance before finishing the wagering while a few finish well ahead. Our guide to how much a casino bonus is worth explains the method, and the wagering calculator will run your own numbers.

Deposit match bonus wagering under the UK 10x cap

From 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission's social responsibility code limits bonus wagering to 10 times the bonus funds. The final code wording, set out on the Commission's page on the rewritten SR code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab), also bars a casino from changing or increasing an offer because you reach the qualifying spend faster than the offer period.

Before the cap, there was no upper limit on the multiple. The Commission's example was a £10 bonus at 50x, needing £500 of play. Today the same bonus needs £100 at most. The cap is written in terms of the bonus funds, so read each offer to see exactly what the multiple applies to; our wagering requirements guide covers the wording you'll see.

Your own deposit is different. The Commission's guidance on restrictions on withdrawing deposit and deposit winnings (opens in a new tab) says players must not be made to meet wagering before withdrawing from their deposit balance, even if those funds are linked to a bonus.

Max bet and time limits: how long the wagering really takes

A maximum bet stops you clearing wagering with a few huge stakes. Casumo's offer caps bets at £5 while the bonus is active. At £5 a spin, £1,000 of wagering takes at least 200 spins; at 50p it takes 2,000. UK slots must allow at least 2.5 seconds per spin, so 2,000 spins is at least 83 minutes of continuous play, inside a 7-day window.

10bet's £250 requirement must be met on slots within 3 days. At 20p a spin that's 1,250 spins, or at least 52 minutes of spinning. That's manageable for a regular slots player, but it's a real commitment of time, and time is where budgets slip. Breaking the max bet rule can cost you the bonus and its winnings, as our answer on what happens if you break the max bet rule explains.

Game weighting: why matched bonuses suit slots

Matched bonuses usually count slot stakes in full and table or live games at a fraction, or not at all. 10bet's bonus must be wagered on slots, and Casumo's terms carry game and play restrictions. Never assume a matched bonus can be used on blackjack, roulette or live casino; check the terms first.

100%£250£10£2.50
50%£500£20£5
10%£2,500£100£25

Low-edge table games look tempting for clearing wagering, which is exactly why casinos weight them down. At 10% weighting the expected cost of the wagering can be larger than the bonus. Our explainer on game weighting has more detail, and can I use a bonus on live casino answers the common question.

Play restrictions and what counts as irregular play

The Commission's guidance on promotional play restrictions (opens in a new tab) says a casino's terms must clearly set out every prohibited type or pattern of play in advance, can't ban something that wasn't spelled out, and can't reserve sole discretion to decide what breaks the rules. If winnings are removed, you must get a full explanation of the breach.

That protects you, but it also means the restrictions are written down for a reason. Opening more than one account, betting above the maximum or playing excluded games can lose you the bonus. There's no legitimate trick that clears wagering cheaply, and our answer to what is bonus abuse explains how casinos define it.

How to claim a deposit match bonus step by step

  1. Decide your deposit from your budget first, then see what bonus it earns; don't deposit up to the cap just because it's there.
  2. Check the minimum deposit (£20 at Casumo) and any excluded payment methods (Skrill and Neteller at 10bet).
  3. Opt in or choose the casino welcome bonus at sign-up, as the offer requires.
  4. Make the qualifying deposit within the allowed time; 10bet gives 7 days from sign-up.
  5. Note the wagering total, the deadline and the maximum bet before you place a bet.
  6. Play eligible games only, and track progress in the bonus section of your account.
  7. Stop when your budget is used, even if the wagering isn't finished; your remaining cash balance can still be withdrawn.

Is a deposit match bonus worth it?

Advantages

  • Bigger potential value than most spin offers.
  • Lets you choose among eligible slots rather than one named game.
  • Wagering is now capped at 10x in the UK.

Drawbacks

  • Wagering has a real average cost, around 40% of the bonus at a 4% edge.
  • Max bet and short deadlines can push you to play longer or faster.
  • Table and live games usually don't help.
  • Winnings can be capped, such as £1,000 at 10bet.

A matched bonus makes sense if you'd deposit that amount and play those slots anyway. If it would make you deposit more or play longer, it isn't worth it. Our guide on whether to take a casino bonus and our comparison of free spins vs deposit match help with the choice.

Frequently asked questions

What is a deposit match bonus?

It's a bonus that adds a percentage of your deposit as bonus funds, up to a cap. A 100% match up to £25 turns a £25 deposit into £25 cash plus £25 bonus. The bonus funds then have to be wagered, at most 10 times in the UK, before winnings from them can be withdrawn. Our wagering requirements guide explains that step, and the welcome bonus guide shows how matches compare with other offers.

How do you calculate a deposit match bonus?

Multiply your deposit by the match percentage, then stop at the cap. For a 50% match up to £100, a £60 deposit gives £30 and anything over £200 gives £100. To estimate the value, multiply the bonus by 10 for the wagering, multiply that by the house edge of the games you play, and subtract the result from the bonus. Our wagering calculator does this for you, and expected value explained shows the maths.

Can I withdraw my deposit before finishing the wagering?

Yes, the Gambling Commission says you can withdraw your deposit balance at any time, including while a bonus is active. Wagering must not be applied to your own money. You'll usually lose the bonus and any winnings made from it, so check the terms. Casinos must show cash and bonus balances separately so you can see what's yours. Our answer on withdrawing without using your bonus and our guide to bonuses and withdrawals explain more.

What is the maximum bet with a deposit match bonus?

It's set by each casino's terms; Casumo's welcome offer limits bets to £5 while the bonus is active. A maximum bet stops players clearing wagering with a few very large stakes. Going over it can lead to the bonus and its winnings being removed, as long as the rule was clearly set out. Our max bet rule page explains how these limits work, and our glossary entry on max bet gives a short definition.

Can I use a deposit match bonus on blackjack or roulette?

Usually only in a limited way, if at all. Many matched bonuses exclude table and live games or count them at a small percentage towards wagering, and 10bet's bonus must be wagered on slots. Check the game weighting table in the terms before you play. At 10% weighting, the stakes needed can make the bonus cost more than it gives. Our blackjack bonus guide and our answer on using a bonus on blackjack explain why.

Is a bigger match percentage always better?

No, the cap and the wagering matter more than the percentage. A 100% match up to £25 and a 50% match up to £100 suit different deposits: on £25 the first gives £25 and the second £12.50, but on £200 the second gives £100. Deposit what your budget allows and compare the bonus each offer gives at that amount. Our guide to £10 deposit casino bonuses covers small deposits, and high roller bonuses covers large ones.

What happens if the bonus runs out before wagering is complete?

If your bonus balance reaches zero, the bonus simply ends, and there's nothing left to wager. Any cash balance you still hold remains yours to withdraw. If the time limit passes with bonus funds unused, those funds and their winnings are usually forfeited. That's the normal outcome for many players, because the house edge works on every wagered pound. Our page on casino bonus mistakes covers how to avoid surprises, and bonus terms explained explains expiry rules.

Why are Skrill and Neteller excluded from deposit match bonuses?

Casinos choose which payment methods qualify for their offers and list exclusions in the terms. 10bet excludes Skrill and Neteller deposits from its welcome bonus, and Casumo says payment restrictions apply. A deposit by an excluded method still works for normal play but won't trigger the match. Our answer on why payment methods are excluded explains the usual reasons, and our Skrill casinos page covers that method.
