Casino welcome bonus UK guide
A casino welcome bonus in the UK is an offer for new customers, usually spins or a matched deposit, that you get after a first deposit or a qualifying stake. Since 19 January 2026 any wagering on it is capped at 10x the bonus, so what matters now is the conditions, the game list and what the extra play is really worth.
Key takeaways
- Every welcome bonus at our five partner casinos needs a deposit or a qualifying stake; none is a no-deposit offer.
- Wagering on bonus funds can't be more than 10x the bonus since 19 January 2026.
- The house edge keeps working while you play through a bonus, so its average value is lower than the headline figure.
- Table and live games are often excluded or count for less towards wagering, so read the terms first.
- Wagering cap
- 10x the bonus (from 19 January 2026)
- Mixed-product offers
- Banned from 19 January 2026
- Who can claim
- New customers, 18+, age and ID verified
- Your own deposit
- Withdrawable at any time
- Partner no-deposit offers
- None
What a casino welcome bonus in the UK actually is
A welcome bonus is a one-off promotion that a licensed casino gives a new customer for opening an account and making a first deposit or a first set of bets. It sits alongside the rest of the casino bonuses explained on our hub, but it is the one most people meet first, because it is the offer on the front page of almost every UK casino.
The bonus itself is usually one of two things. It is either a set of spins on chosen slots, each worth a fixed amount such as 10p, or extra bonus funds added on top of your deposit, for example 100% of what you pay in up to a limit. Either way, the casino is paying for your first sessions in the hope that you stay. That's a marketing cost to them, not a gift, and the terms are written to control how much it can cost.
Two things stay true whatever the headline says. First, every game still has its normal house edge, so spinning or betting with bonus funds loses money on average just like spinning with your own cash. Second, the conditions attached to the bonus decide how much of it you are likely to turn into withdrawable money. A large headline with tight terms can be worth less than a small offer with none.
Types of UK casino welcome bonus and how each pays out
Welcome offers at UK-licensed casinos fall into a handful of shapes. The table sets out how each one works and what usually limits it.
| Type | What you do | What you get | Main limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spins for a qualifying stake | Deposit and stake a set amount on slots | A batch of spins at a fixed value | Chosen games, short claim and use windows |
| Deposit-linked spins | Make a first deposit of a minimum amount | Spins on one named slot | One game, spin value fixed, payment exclusions |
| Matched deposit | Deposit and opt in | Bonus funds as a percentage of the deposit | Wagering (max 10x), max bet, expiry, game list |
| Daily spin drops | Qualify once, then claim each day | Spins spread over several days | Daily claim deadline, each batch expires |
| Money back on play | Play as normal | A small share of stakes or losses returned | Rate and payout form set by the casino |
Spin offers suit people who mainly play slots and want a fixed, easy-to-value extra. A deposit match bonus gives more to play with but comes with wagering and a maximum bet rule. Offers with no playthrough at all, covered in our guide to the no wagering casino bonus, are usually smaller but easier to understand.
UK welcome bonus rules you can rely on
The Gambling Commission's social responsibility code changed on 19 January 2026. The Commission's own announcement, gambling promotions to be safer and simpler (opens in a new tab), set out two changes that apply to every welcome bonus offered in Great Britain.
| Rule | What it means for you | In force |
|---|---|---|
| Wagering cap (SR code 5.1.1) | You can't be asked to play bonus funds through more than 10 times | 19 January 2026 |
| Mixed-product ban | One offer can't combine casino with betting, bingo or lottery | 19 January 2026 |
| No faster-qualifier boosts | An offer can't be changed or increased because you hit the qualifying spend sooner | Carried over in the 2026 code |
| Deposit stays yours | You can withdraw your deposit balance at any time, even with a bonus active | Commission guidance |
| Separate balances | Cash and bonus balances must be shown separately | Commission guidance |
| Credit card ban | You can't fund gambling with a credit card | 14 April 2020 |
| ID before play | Age and identity must be checked before you deposit or gamble | 7 May 2019 |
The Commission's example of the old problem is a £10 bonus with 50x wagering, which needed £500 of play before any winnings could come out. Under the cap, the same £10 bonus can need at most £100. The full background is on our page about the UK casino bonus rules, and the mixed-product ban has its own explainer.
The Commission's consumer page on free offers and bonuses (opens in a new tab) adds the player-side view: you should be able to walk away at any time, keep what is left of your deposit and any winnings from it, and know clearly whether you are playing with your own money or bonus funds.
Best casino welcome bonus offers at our UK partners, side by side
'Best' depends on what you play, so the table below simply lines up the five offers we promote, as last checked on 5 October 2026. All are for new customers aged 18+, and terms apply.
| Casino | Offer | What qualifies | Wagering | Key limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coral | 100 spins at 10p | Deposit and bet £10+ on slots | None on spin winnings | Selected games; accept in 48 hours; 7 days to use |
| Ladbrokes | Up to 500 spins at 10p | Deposit and spend £10+ on slots | None | 50 a day for 10 days; claim by 23:59 daily; 7 days each |
| PlayOJO | 80 spins at 10p | First deposit of £10+ | None, paid in cash | Big Bass Bonanza only; not Northern Ireland |
| Casumo | 50% up to £100 | First deposit of £20+ | 10x the bonus in 7 days | £5 max bet; game and payment limits |
| 10bet | 100% up to £25 | Pick the offer at sign-up, deposit within 7 days | 10x on slots in 3 days | £1,000 max bonus winnings |
Payment method matters too. Coral excludes Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards; Ladbrokes excludes prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers; 10bet excludes Skrill and Neteller. Our page on payment methods excluded from bonuses explains why casinos do this.
Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited, part of Entain, so one person may not be able to open new accounts and take a welcome offer at both.
What a welcome bonus is really worth in pounds
The headline is the face value. The useful number is the expected value: what the bonus returns on average once the game's edge has taken its share. For spins, multiply the number of spins by the spin value and then by the slot's RTP. For a matched bonus, take the bonus and subtract the average cost of the wagering, which is the total you must stake multiplied by the house edge.
| Offer | Face value | Working | Rough average value |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayOJO 80 spins | £8.00 | £8.00 × 96.71% RTP (Big Bass Bonanza) | about £7.74, paid as cash |
| Coral 100 spins | £10.00 | £10.00 × 96% illustrative RTP, minus about 40p average cost of the £10 qualifying stake | about £9.20 |
| Casumo, £200 deposit | £100 bonus | £1,000 to wager × 4% illustrative edge = £40 | about £60 |
| 10bet, £25 deposit | £25 bonus | £250 to wager × 4% illustrative edge = £10 | about £15 |
The 96% figure is an illustration, because the eligible games and their RTP settings vary; check each game's help screen. Big Bass Bonanza is listed at 96.71%, but casinos can run different RTP versions of the same slot. Our guide to how much a casino bonus is worth goes further, and the wagering calculator runs the sums for any offer.
These are long-run averages. A real session can finish with nothing left or with a good win, and a high-volatility slot makes both ends more likely. That's why a welcome bonus is best seen as extra play time, not as money you're owed.
Welcome bonus terms that decide the value
The Commission says significant conditions must be shown clearly with the headline offer and the full terms kept one click away. These are the ones worth reading every time:
- Eligible games. Spin offers name the slots; matched bonuses often exclude or reduce some games through game weighting.
- Wagering. Up to 10x the bonus. Check whether the multiple applies to the bonus only, which is how the cap is written.
- Maximum bet. Casumo's offer limits bets to £5 while the bonus is active.
- Time limits. 48 hours to accept and 7 days to use at Coral; 3 days to wager at 10bet; 7 days at Casumo.
- Payment exclusions. Some e-wallets and prepaid cards don't qualify at several partners.
- Winnings caps. 10bet limits bonus winnings to £1,000.
- Where you live. PlayOJO's offer excludes Northern Ireland, where the Commission's rules don't apply anyway.
Our longer guide to casino bonus terms covers every clause in plain English, including what counts as irregular play.
Can a UK welcome bonus be used on blackjack, roulette or live casino?
Usually not in full. The spin offers from Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO are slot offers by design, and 10bet's bonus must be wagered on slots. Matched bonuses elsewhere often exclude table and live games or count them at a fraction of their stake, so always check the terms before you place a bet.
The sums show why the weighting matters. If a casino counted blackjack at 10%, £250 of required wagering would take £2,500 of blackjack stakes, and the expected cost of those stakes could eat the whole bonus. Our answers to can you play blackjack with a bonus and using a bonus on live casino explain the trade-offs.
How to claim a casino welcome bonus safely
- Read the offer's significant terms on the landing page: qualifying deposit, stake, games, spin value, wagering and expiry.
- Register with your real details. The casino must check your age and identity before you can deposit.
- Set a deposit limit when prompted before your first deposit; it's the default since 31 October 2025.
- Deposit with a method that qualifies. Debit card is the usual safe choice; check the exclusions list.
- Opt in if the offer asks you to. UK promotions can't enrol you automatically.
- Complete the qualifying step, such as £10 on slots, then accept the spins or bonus within the window.
- Track the expiry dates and stop when your budget is used, whether or not the bonus is finished.
Welcome bonus myths and costly mistakes
Advantages
- Truth: a bonus gives extra play at a known average cost.
- Truth: you can withdraw your own deposit balance while a bonus is live.
- Truth: no-wagering spin winnings are yours to withdraw as cash.
Drawbacks
- Myth: a bigger headline always means a better offer.
- Myth: you must play a bonus through before touching your own money.
- Myth: a staking pattern can clear wagering without the edge applying.
The most common mistakes are depositing with an excluded e-wallet, betting above the maximum stake, and playing a game that doesn't count. Our list of casino bonus mistakes has the rest. There's also no trick that makes wagering cheaper: every system just rearranges bets that each carry the same edge.
Keeping a welcome bonus inside your budget
A welcome offer is designed to get you playing, so decide your spend before you see it. Since 28 February 2025 casinos must run a financial vulnerability check when your net deposits pass £150 in 30 days, and since 31 October 2025 they must prompt you to set a limit before your first deposit. Use that prompt. Our guide to setting deposit limits shows the options.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best casino welcome bonus in the UK?
The best welcome bonus is the one whose conditions suit how you play, not the one with the biggest number. A slots player may prefer no-wagering spins, because the winnings come out as cash. Someone who wants more play time may accept a matched deposit with 10x wagering and a maximum bet. Compare the expected value, the eligible games and the time limits. Our bonus value guide shows the sums, and the bonuses hub lists every bonus type we cover.
Is there a limit on wagering for UK welcome bonuses?
Yes, wagering on bonus funds can't be more than 10 times the bonus since 19 January 2026. The Gambling Commission set the cap in its social responsibility code after consulting in 2023. A £20 bonus can therefore need at most £200 of qualifying bets. Offers can still have other conditions, such as eligible games, a maximum bet and an expiry date. Read our explainer on wagering requirements for worked examples and the UK bonus rules page for the legal background.
Can I withdraw my deposit if I don't want the bonus any more?
Yes, the Gambling Commission says you must be able to withdraw your deposit balance at any time, even while a bonus is active. You may lose the bonus and any winnings made from bonus funds, but your own unspent money stays yours. Casinos must also show your cash and bonus balances separately so you can see which is which. Our guide to withdrawing with a bonus active explains how the two balances work and when winnings can be held back.
Do I need a promo code for a welcome bonus?
No, none of our five partner casinos needs a promo code for its welcome offer. You qualify by registering, opting in where asked and completing the deposit or stake. PlayOJO's offer is only available through its designated offer link, and 10bet asks you to choose the casino welcome bonus at sign-up. Codes still exist elsewhere, but they don't change the 10x wagering cap or any other UK rule. Our page on casino bonus codes explains when a code is needed and when it is not.
Can I claim welcome bonuses at Coral and Ladbrokes?
Possibly not, because both brands are run by the same company, LC International Limited, which is part of Entain. Operators in the same group often limit welcome offers to one per person across their brands, so check both sets of terms before you register. Opening several accounts to take repeated welcome offers breaks the terms at most casinos. Our answer on holding accounts at several casinos covers the rules, and our Coral vs Ladbrokes comparison sets the two side by side.
Why can't I use PayPal or Skrill for a welcome bonus?
Some casinos exclude certain e-wallets and prepaid cards from their welcome offers, and the terms list which ones. At Coral, Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don't qualify; Ladbrokes and 10bet have similar lists. A deposit by an excluded method still works for normal play but won't trigger the bonus. Our answer on why payment methods are excluded from bonuses explains the reasons, and the PayPal casinos page covers that method in detail.
Are welcome bonus winnings taxed in the UK?
No, players in the UK don't pay tax on gambling winnings, including winnings from a welcome bonus or spins. Duty is paid by the operators instead, and remote gaming duty rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. That tax change affects casinos' costs, which may shape how generous offers are, but it doesn't touch your winnings. Our page on whether casino winnings are taxed and our UK gambling tax guide explain the details.
Should I take a welcome bonus at all?
Take one only if you were going to play anyway and the terms fit your usual games and stakes. A bonus doesn't change the house edge, and wagering can push you to play more than you planned. If you mostly play table or live games, many offers will barely help. Skipping the bonus keeps things simple and leaves your deposit free of conditions. Our guide on whether to take a casino bonus walks through the decision, and setting a gambling budget comes first either way.
