Action: meaning in casino games

In casino slang, action means the total amount of money you put through a game, counting every bet rather than what you brought to the table. At a poker table it also means whose turn it is. Action matters because your expected loss is worked out on it, not on your starting balance.

Key takeaways

  • Action is total turnover: £10 bets over 100 spins is £1,000 of action, even if you only started with £50.
  • Expected loss equals action multiplied by the house edge.
  • In poker, "the action is on you" means it is your turn to bet, call, raise or fold.
  • Bonus wagering is required action: a £100 bonus at 10x needs £1,000 of bets.
Meaning 1
Total amount wagered (turnover)
Meaning 2

Expected loss
Action × house edge
Example
£1,000 action at 2.70% = £27

Wagering no more than 10x the bonus

What action means in gambling

Action has two common meanings at the casino. The first, and the one that matters for your money, is the total amount you have bet. If you sit down with £50 at European roulette, bet £5 a spin and play 40 spins, you have given the game £200 of action, because winnings that you bet again count as new stakes. The second meaning comes from poker: the action is on whichever player must act next.

A third, looser use describes a game or table that is busy ("plenty of action") or a player's appetite for betting. This casino glossary entry concentrates on the first two, because those are the ones that change what you pay.

Why action, not your balance, sets the cost

The house edge is a share of every pound bet. Wizard of Odds defines the house edge (opens in a new tab) as the average loss divided by the initial bet, so the average cost of a session is simply action multiplied by the edge. The formula is the same for every game: expected loss = total staked × house edge.

That is why a small bankroll can still carry a large cost. £50 recycled through a slot several times can produce £300 or £400 of action, and the expected loss is worked out on that larger figure. Casinos call the result your theoretical loss, and they use it to value players for comps and loyalty rewards.

Action and expected loss in four games
Game and betActionHouse edgeExpected loss
European roulette, £10 × 100 spins£1,0002.70%£27.00
American roulette, £10 × 100 spins£1,0005.26%£52.60
Baccarat banker, £10 × 100 hands£1,0001.06%£10.60
Slot at 96% RTP, 50p × 200 spins£1004.00%£4.00

The edges are standard game maths: single-zero roulette 2.70%, double-zero 5.26%, the banker bet in eight-deck baccarat 1.06%, and a 96% RTP slot 4%. Real sessions swing well above and below these averages, but the more action you give a game, the closer your results tend to sit to them.

Action in poker: whose turn it is

In poker, action passes clockwise round the table, and when it reaches you, you must check, bet, call, raise or fold. Dealers say "action is on you" to prompt a slow player. In a fixed-limit or no-limit game, acting out of turn is poor etiquette because it gives information to players who have not yet acted.

In casino poker played against the dealer, such as Casino Hold'em, there is no betting round between players, so action simply means your decision point: after seeing your two cards and the flop you either fold or make a Call bet of twice the ante. Live versions give you a betting window with a countdown, and UK rules require at least 5 seconds per game cycle for casino games other than slots.

Action and bonus wagering requirements

A wagering requirement is a set amount of action you must place before bonus money becomes withdrawable. Since 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission's promotions rules (opens in a new tab) cap wagering at 10 times the bonus. Here is how to work out the cost of clearing one.

  1. Find the bonus amount and the wagering multiple (for example £100 at 10x).
  2. Multiply them to get the action required: £100 × 10 = £1,000.
  3. Check which games count, and at what rate. Table and live games are often excluded or count for less.
  4. Multiply the required action by the house edge of the game you will use: £1,000 on a 96% RTP slot has an expected cost of £40.
  5. Compare that cost with the bonus. The edge still applies to every bet while you wager.

UK casinos must now show your net spend and time spent in real time. Watching that figure is a simple way to keep track of how much action you have given a game.

Myths about action and turnover

  • "I only lost what I deposited, so my action was small." Re-betting winnings counts as action, and the expected loss is worked out on all of it.
  • "Changing bet sizes lowers the cost." A betting system changes how action is spread across bets, not the edge on each pound.
  • "More action earns comps that make up for losses." Comps are worked out from theoretical loss, so they are a fraction of what the action is expected to cost.

Frequently asked questions

What does action mean in a casino?

Action means the total amount you bet, counting every stake including winnings you bet again. Ten £5 bets are £50 of action whether you won or lost along the way. Casinos measure players by action because, multiplied by the house edge, it gives the amount a player is expected to lose over time. Our house edge explained page shows the calculation in more detail for each game.

What does "the action is on you" mean?

It means it is your turn to act at the poker table. Depending on what has happened before you, your options are to check, bet, call, raise or fold. Dealers use the phrase to keep the game moving. In casino poker games against the dealer there is only one player decision per stage, explained on our Casino Hold'em page with the rules for each bet.

How do I work out my expected loss from action?

Multiply your total action by the house edge. £600 of action on European roulette at 2.70% gives an expected loss of £16.20, while the same action on a 96% RTP slot gives £24. These are long-run averages, so a single session can be much better or worse. Our expected value guide works through more examples across different games and stakes.

Is action the same as turnover?

Yes, in casino use the two words mean the same thing: the total amount staked over a period. Operators also talk about handle or drop for land-based tables, but online the measure is simply turnover. It is different from your net loss, which is what you are down overall. See our glossary entry on net loss for how the two figures relate.

Does bonus wagering count as action?

Yes. A wagering requirement is a target amount of action, so a £50 bonus at 10x needs £500 of qualifying bets. Under UK rules from 19 January 2026, wagering cannot exceed 10 times the bonus. Only bets on eligible games count, and some games count at a reduced rate, so check the terms first. Our 10x wagering cap page explains the rule.

Why do casinos care about my action?

Because your action multiplied by the house edge tells them what you are worth to them on average. That theoretical figure, not your actual wins or losses, usually decides comps, loyalty points and VIP status. It also explains why rewards rise with play: they are a small share of what the extra action is expected to cost you. Read how casinos make money for the full picture.
