Jeu zero bet in roulette

The jeu zero bet is a four-chip call bet that covers the seven numbers sitting closest to zero on a single-zero wheel: 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15. It hits 7 times in 37 spins on average, pays a net 14 or 32 chips when it lands, and carries the same 2.70% house edge as every other single-zero bet.

Key takeaways

  • Jeu zero uses 4 chips: splits on 0/3, 12/15 and 32/35, plus a straight-up on 26.
  • It wins on 7 of 37 numbers (18.92%); a hit on 26 is the best result, a net +32 chips.
  • The house edge is 2.70%, so a £4 jeu zero costs about 10.8p a spin on average.
  • It is a single-zero bet found on the racetrack of European and French tables, not American ones.

What the jeu zero bet is

Jeu zéro means "zero game" in French. It is one of the four classic roulette call bets, sometimes called announced or racetrack bets, which back a slice of the wheel rather than a block of the table. Where a dozen bet covers 1 to 12 in a neat row on the layout, jeu zero covers a physical arc of the wheel: the zero pocket plus the three numbers on either side of it.

On the single-zero wheel the pocket order runs 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, and so on. Those seven bold numbers are the jeu zero sector. They look random on the betting grid, scattered across all three columns and all three dozens, which is why the bet is placed with four separate chips rather than one. If you want to see the whole sequence, our guide to roulette wheel numbers sets it out pocket by pocket.

Jeu zero sits inside a bigger call bet. All seven of its numbers also belong to voisins du zéro, the 17-number sector around zero. Think of jeu zero as the tight core of that larger bet: fewer numbers, fewer chips and a bigger net return when it lands.

Where the four jeu zero chips go

Standard descriptions of the bet, including the Wizard of Odds sector bets page (opens in a new tab) and the Wikipedia roulette article (opens in a new tab), agree on four units placed like this:

Jeu zero chip layout (4 units)
ChipBet typeNumbersPays
1Split0 and 317 to 1
2Split12 and 1517 to 1
3Split32 and 3517 to 1
4Straight up2635 to 1

So six of the seven numbers are covered by split bets and the seventh, 26, gets a straight-up bet on its own. The splits work because the pairs touch on the table: 0 sits next to 3 at the top of the layout, 12 sits above 15, and 32 sits above 35. 26 has no neighbouring sector number on the grid, so it needs a chip to itself.

Some sources describe the 12 split loosely as "12 to 15". The chip covers just two numbers, 12 and 15. Nothing between them is part of the bet.

Jeu zero payout for every winning number

Because each number is covered by only one chip, a hit always pays on a single chip while the other three lose. That gives two possible winning outcomes and one losing outcome. The table below uses 1-unit chips, so the total stake is 4 units.

Jeu zero results with 1-unit chips (4 units staked)

26Straight up36 units+32 units1 in 37 (2.70%)
Any other number (30 numbers)None0−4 units30 in 37 (81.08%)

"Returned" includes the winning chip itself. A split paying 17 to 1 gives back 17 units of winnings plus the 1-unit chip, which is 18 units; take away the 4 units you put down and you are 14 units up. On 26, the 35 to 1 straight-up hands back 36 units, a net 32. If you want a refresher on how the to-1 format works, see roulette payouts.

The same bet in pounds

With £1 chips, a jeu zero costs £4 a spin. When one of the six split numbers lands you collect £18 and finish £14 ahead for that spin. If 26 lands you collect £36, £32 ahead. On the other 30 numbers the £4 is gone. With £2.50 chips the bet costs £10, a split hit nets £35 and a 26 hit nets £80.

Jeu zero odds and house edge worked out

The probability side is simple counting on a 37-pocket wheel. Seven numbers win, so the bet lands 7 times in 37, or 18.92% of spins. Put the other way, it misses about four spins in five.

The house edge comes from averaging all 37 outcomes. Over 37 spins with every number landing once, you would collect +14 six times (+84), +32 once (+32) and −4 thirty times (−120). The total is −4 units across 37 spins of a 4-unit bet. Divide by the 148 units staked and you get −1/37, which is a loss of 2.70% of everything wagered. That matches the 2.70% figure Wizard of Odds gives for jeu zero and the other sector bets on a single-zero wheel.

In plain money terms, the expected value of a £4 jeu zero is about −10.8p per spin. At 60 spins an hour (the low end of the 60 to 80 games an hour Evolution quotes for its Auto Roulette tables), you would stake £240 and expect to lose about £6.48 an hour on average. Any real session can land far from that figure in either direction, because 81% of spins lose the whole stake while the wins come in lumps.

How to place a jeu zero bet online or at a live table

Most online single-zero tables put call bets on an oval racetrack beside the main grid. Labels vary: "Jeu 0", "Zero" or "Zero Game". Pragmatic Play, for example, lists a Zero Game call bet on Mega Roulette (opens in a new tab) alongside Tiers, Voisins and Orphelins. The steps below cover the usual process.

  1. Open a single-zero game (European or French) and choose your chip value. Remember that jeu zero takes four chips, so a 50p chip means a £2 bet.
  2. Switch to the racetrack view if the table does not show it by default; look for an oval or a "racetrack" or "special bets" button.
  3. Tap the "Jeu 0" or "Zero Game" segment once. The game drops one chip on each of the three splits and one on 26.
  4. Check the bet total before the timer runs out. Tapping the segment again usually adds another full set of four chips.
  5. If the racetrack is missing, place the four chips by hand: on the line between 0 and 3, between 12 and 15, between 32 and 35, and in the middle of 26.

At a land-based table you would announce the bet and hand over the chips, which is where the name "call bet" comes from. Online, the button does the announcing for you.

Zero spiel naca: the five-chip jeu zero variant

A version known as zero spiel naca adds a fifth chip, a straight-up on 19, the next pocket clockwise after 15. That stretches the arc to eight numbers. The name itself is explained in what the zero spiel is.

Jeu zero against zero spiel naca (1-unit chips)
VersionChipsNumbersChance of a hitNet on a split numberNet on a straight numberHouse edge
Jeu zero477/37 (18.92%)+14+32 (26)2.70%
Zero spiel naca588/37 (21.62%)+13+31 (26 or 19)2.70%

The arithmetic for the five-chip version: six split numbers give +13 each, 26 and 19 give +31 each, and 29 numbers lose 5. That sums to 78 + 62 − 145 = −5 units across 37 spins of a 5-unit bet, again −1/37 or 2.70%. You hit a little more often but every win is a unit smaller, and the bet costs 25% more per spin.

Jeu zero compared with the other call bets

Every standard sector bet has the same 2.70% edge, so the choice between them is about coverage and swing, not value. Jeu zero is the smallest of the traditional French set, which makes it the cheapest to place and the most volatile of the group apart from a simple neighbours bet.

Classic call bets on a single-zero wheel
Call betNumbersChipsChance of a hitHouse edge
Voisins du zéro17917/37 (45.95%)2.70%
Tiers du cylindre12612/37 (32.43%)2.70%
Orphelins858/37 (21.62%)2.70%
Jeu zéro747/37 (18.92%)2.70%
Neighbours (5 numbers)555/37 (13.51%)2.70%

One neat comparison is with "zero and the neighbours", the five-chip neighbours bet on 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15. That uses straight-ups only, so each hit nets +31 but you cover two fewer numbers than jeu zero. Jeu zero gets more coverage from fewer chips because splits do double duty. Neither is better value; the tiers du cylindre and orphelins work the same way on other parts of the wheel.

Jeu zero strategy myths and common mistakes

  • "Zero is due, so jeu zero is due." Each spin is independent. A sector that has missed for 50 spins is exactly as likely to hit next spin as one that hit last time. The gambler's fallacy is the belief that it is not.
  • "The dealer aims for zero." Wheel speeds, ball speeds and deflectors make targeting a sector unworkable, and online RNG games pick results with a certified random number generator.
  • "Covering zero protects my outside bets." Jeu zero and an even-money bet are two separate bets, each with a 2.70% edge. Combining them leaves the total edge at 2.70%.
  • Forgetting the chip count. A £1 tap on the racetrack is a £4 bet. That matters for your budget and for any table maximum.
  • Using it on a double-zero wheel. The sector is defined by single-zero pocket order. American tables do not normally offer it, and the numbers next to 0 there are different.

No pattern, sector or staking plan beats the edge. The roulette betting systems guide shows why progressions such as Martingale leave the cost per pound unchanged.

Jeu zero in live and RNG roulette

The bet works identically in a random number generator game and at a live wheel: seven pockets out of 37, same payouts, same 2.70% edge. What differs is pace and presentation. Live tables are slower, which lowers the hourly cost at a fixed stake, while some fast formats spin more often. Our comparison of RNG and live roulette goes through those differences.

Multiplier games change the sums. In Lightning Roulette, for example, an unboosted straight-up pays 29 to 1 instead of 35 to 1, so the 26 chip in a jeu zero returns less unless 26 is struck as a lucky number. If you place call bets on a multiplier table, read the payout table in the help screen first rather than assuming the standard figures above.

UK rules that affect jeu zero play online

Roulette is a casino game rather than a slot, so the £5 and £2 online slot stake limits do not apply to it. The Gambling Commission's remote product design standard, RTS 14 (opens in a new tab), does apply: since 17 January 2025, non-slot casino games must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, autoplay is banned (a re-bet button is allowed), you cannot play several games at once, and your net spend and time played must be shown as you go. A re-bet button that repeats your jeu zero is fine; an automatic spin cycle is not.

Because a single tap places four chips, it is worth setting a deposit limit before you start. Our guide to deposit limits shows how, and the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133, run by GamCare) is open 24/7 if roulette stops feeling like entertainment.

Where to play jeu zero roulette in the UK

Jeu zero needs a single-zero table with a racetrack, so look in a casino's European or French roulette section and check the game's help screen for its call-bet list. We have not checked which roulette tables our partner casinos carry; check each casino's game lobby.

Frequently asked questions

What numbers are in the jeu zero bet?

The jeu zero bet covers seven numbers: 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15. They are the zero pocket and the three pockets on either side of it on a single-zero wheel. On the betting grid they look scattered, which is why the bet uses four chips: splits on 0/3, 12/15 and 32/35, plus a straight-up on 26. All seven numbers also belong to the larger voisins du zéro sector, so jeu zero is the central part of that bet.

How much does jeu zero pay?

Jeu zero pays a net 14 units or 32 units, depending on which number lands. With 1-unit chips you stake 4. If 0, 3, 12, 15, 32 or 35 lands, one split pays 17 to 1 and returns 18 units, so you are 14 up. If 26 lands, the straight-up pays 35 to 1 and returns 36 units, a net 32. Any other number loses all four chips. Our roulette payouts page explains the to-1 format in full.

What are the odds of winning a jeu zero bet?

A jeu zero bet wins 7 times in 37 spins on average, a probability of 18.92%. That breaks down as 6 in 37 for one of the split numbers and 1 in 37 for 26. The other 30 numbers lose, so roughly four spins in five end with the whole stake gone. Those figures assume a single-zero wheel with 37 pockets. For how odds are counted on any bet, see our guide to roulette odds.

What is the house edge on jeu zero?

The house edge on jeu zero is 2.70%, the same as every standard bet on a single-zero wheel. Averaged over 37 spins with each number landing once, a 4-unit jeu zero wins 84 units on the splits and 32 on 26 but loses 120 on the misses, a net loss of 4 units from 148 staked. That is 1/37, or 2.70%. Our house edge guide explains the idea across games.

Is jeu zero the same as the zero spiel?

Jeu zero and zero spiel are two names for the same four-chip bet on the seven numbers around zero; "spiel" is German for game, as "jeu" is French. A five-chip version, zero spiel naca, adds a straight-up on 19 and covers eight numbers. Both have a 2.70% house edge. Our answer to what the zero spiel is covers the naming, and the table above compares the two versions side by side.

Is jeu zero a good roulette bet?

Jeu zero is neither better nor worse value than other single-zero bets, because they all cost 2.70% of what you stake. It suits players who like covering a wheel sector with a small four-chip bet and accept that it misses about 81% of the time. If your aim is the lowest cost per pound, even-money bets under La Partage on a French table cost 1.35%. See what the best roulette bet is for a fuller comparison.

Can you bet jeu zero on American roulette?

Jeu zero is not normally offered on American roulette, because it is defined by the pocket order of a single-zero wheel. A double-zero wheel arranges its numbers differently and has an extra 00 pocket, so the seven-number sector does not exist there in the same form. Every standard American bet also carries a higher 5.26% edge. The American roulette guide sets out how the double-zero game differs.

Does La Partage apply to jeu zero?

La Partage does not apply to jeu zero. That rule only gives half the stake back on even-money bets, such as red or black, when the ball lands on zero. Jeu zero already covers zero through its 0/3 split, so a zero actually wins the bet: the split pays 17 to 1 and you finish 14 units ahead with 1-unit chips. Our La Partage rule guide explains which bets the rule covers.

How much does a jeu zero cost per hour?

A £4 jeu zero costs about £6.48 an hour on average at 60 spins an hour. Each spin carries an expected loss of 2.70% of £4, which is 10.8p, and 60 spins multiply that to £6.48 from £240 staked. Faster tables cost more per hour at the same stake and slower live tables cost less. Real sessions vary widely around the average. Our page on how long £50 lasts at roulette runs similar sums.
