Roulette call bets explained

Roulette call bets are named bundles of ordinary bets that cover a section of the wheel rather than a block of the table, such as voisins du zéro, tiers du cylindre, orphelins, jeu zéro and neighbours. They are placed in one go on the racetrack, and on a single-zero wheel every one keeps the standard 2.70% house edge.

Key takeaways

  • Call bets group splits, straights, trios and corners so they cover a run of neighbouring pockets on the wheel.
  • Voisins (17 numbers, 9 chips), tiers (12 numbers, 6 chips) and orphelins (8 numbers, 5 chips) together cover all 37 pockets.
  • Every call bet on a single-zero wheel has a 2.70% house edge, because each chip inside it does.
  • Online you place them with one click on the racetrack; at a land-based table you announce them to the croupier.
  • Wheel sections are no more likely to win than the same numbers spread across the layout.

What roulette call bets are

Most roulette bets follow the grid of the table layout, where numbers sit in neat rows of three. The wheel puts them in a completely different order. Roulette call bets bridge that gap: each one is a fixed set of ordinary inside bets chosen so that, together, they cover a slice of the wheel itself.

The name comes from land-based French and European tables, where you call the bet out to the croupier, who places the chips for you. They are also called announced bets, sector bets or French bets. Strictly, some casinos keep “call bet” for a bet announced before the chips are handed over and “announced bet” for one placed with chips on the table. Online there is no difference: the stake comes off your balance the moment you click.

There is nothing special about the payouts. A split inside a call bet still pays 17 to 1, a corner still pays 8 to 1, and so on. What you gain is speed and a convenient way to back a run of pockets. What you do not gain is better odds, as the edge section below shows.

The racetrack: how online roulette shows call bets

Online and live-streamed tables show call bets on the racetrack, an oval strip beside the main layout that lists the numbers in wheel order: 0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25-17-34-6-27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33-1-20-14-31-9-22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26, then back to zero. The racetrack is usually divided into labelled zones for voisins, tiers and orphelins, and often jeu zéro.

Clicking a zone places the whole bet at once, with one chip of your selected value on each component. Clicking a single number on the racetrack usually places a neighbours bet on that number and those beside it. Pragmatic Play, for example, lists Zero Game, Tiers, Voisins and Orphelins as racetrack bets on its Mega Roulette game page (opens in a new tab).

Every classic roulette call bet at a glance

The three big sections split the wheel between them, with jeu zéro as a smaller version of voisins and neighbours as a flexible bet you can centre anywhere. The chip counts match those given by Wizard of Odds’ guide to sector bets (opens in a new tab) and the number lists in the Wikipedia roulette article (opens in a new tab).

Each has its own page: voisins du zéro, tiers du cylindre, orphelins and jeu zéro go through the chip maps and every result in detail.

What each call bet pays, number by number

Because a call bet mixes different bet types, the amount you get back depends on which number lands. The table assumes £1 a chip and shows the total returned, stake included, then the net result against the whole bet.

Call bet returns at £1 a chip
Call bet (total stake)Winning numberReturnedNet result
Voisins (£9)0, 2 or 3£24+£15
Voisins (£9)Any of the other 14£18+£9
Tiers (£6)Any of the 12£18+£12
Orphelins (£5)1 or 17£36+£31
Orphelins (£5)6, 9, 14, 20, 31 or 34£18+£13
Jeu zéro (£4)26£36+£32
Jeu zéro (£4)0, 3, 12, 15, 32 or 35£18+£14
Neighbours (£5)Any of the 5£36+£31

Orphelins pays more on 17 because two of its splits (14/17 and 17/20) both include it. Voisins pays more on 0, 2 and 3 because the trio carries two chips at 11 to 1. These quirks shape how each bet feels, but they do not change its cost.

Roulette call bets odds and house edge

Every component of a call bet is a standard single-zero bet with a 2.70% edge, so the bundle has a 2.70% edge too. You can check it directly. For tiers at £1 a chip, 12 of the 37 numbers return £18, so the average return is 12 × £18 ÷ 37 = £5.84 against £6 staked: a loss of 16.2p, or 2.70%. Voisins gives (3 × £24 + 14 × £18) ÷ 37 = £8.76 back on £9, again 2.70%.

Call bet win chances and average cost on a single-zero wheel
Call betChance any number winsStake at £1 a chipAverage loss per spinAt 50 spins an hour
Voisins du zéro17 in 37 (45.95%)£924.3p£12.16
Tiers du cylindre12 in 37 (32.43%)£616.2p£8.11
Orphelins8 in 37 (21.62%)£513.5p£6.76
Jeu zéro7 in 37 (18.92%)£410.8p£5.41
Neighbours (5 chips)5 in 37 (13.51%)£513.5p£6.76

The bigger the bet in chips, the bigger the pound cost, even at the same percentage edge. A voisins bet at £1 a chip costs nearly twice as much per spin as orphelins, simply because nine chips are in play instead of five. Our house edge guide explains the formula, and La Partage does not apply to call bets because none of their parts is an even-money bet.

Can you cover the whole wheel with call bets?

Yes: voisins (17 numbers), tiers (12) and orphelins (8) add up to all 37 pockets. Placing all three takes 20 chips. At £1 a chip that is a £20 bet that always returns something, which some players mistake for a safe position.

Here is what actually happens. On 0, 2 or 3 you get £24 back (+£4). On 1 or 17 you get £36 (+£16). On every one of the other 32 numbers you get £18 back and lose £2. The average return is £720 ÷ 37 = £19.46, a loss of 54p a spin, which is 2.70% of £20. Covering everything turns the game into a slow, steady drain with occasional small wins. The best bet in roulette question has no clever answer: on a single-zero wheel, every standard bet costs the same.

How to place roulette call bets

  1. Choose a single-zero table that shows a racetrack; call bets are not offered on standard double-zero wheels.
  2. Select a chip value. Remember the full bet is that value times the number of chips: 9 for voisins, 6 for tiers, 5 for orphelins, 4 for jeu zéro.
  3. Open or expand the racetrack if it is hidden, then click the named zone for the call bet you want.
  4. Check the bet total and the chips that appear on the main layout, which show exactly which splits and corners you have backed.
  5. At a land-based table, say the bet and its chip value clearly (for example “voisins by two pounds”) and hand over the chips before the croupier calls no more bets.

Call bet variants you may see

A few games offer extended versions. A five-chip form of jeu zéro, sometimes called zero spiel naca, adds a straight-up on 19. A 10-chip tiers known as tiers 5-8-10-11 adds straight-ups on those four numbers to the usual six splits. Wizard of Odds also notes that neighbours bets are usually five chips but can be three or seven at some online and electronic games.

  • Jeu zéro: a compact zero-section bet; see the jeu zéro page.
  • Neighbours: a number plus a set count either side on the wheel.
  • Extended tiers and jeu zéro: extra straight-ups that change the payout on certain numbers but keep the 2.70% edge.
  • Other named bets: some racetracks add further options; the game’s help screen lists what each one covers.

Which UK roulette tables offer call bets

Call bets belong to single-zero roulette. You will find them on many European roulette and French roulette tables, both RNG and live. Live games stream a real wheel, and the racetrack works exactly as on an RNG table; see live roulette for how UK live tables run.

Branded games with multipliers, such as Mega Roulette, can include racetrack bets, but their overall payouts differ from a plain table, so the 2.70% figure may not apply. Check the game’s help screen for its published RTP. Each casino’s range varies too, so check the game lobby for which tables it lists.

Myths about sector and call bets

  • “Dealers aim for sections.” The idea of a dealer signature does not survive the maths of a properly maintained wheel. UK games must produce acceptably random results, and live wheels are often launched automatically.
  • “Hot sections keep coming up.” Results boards show short-term clusters that happen by chance. Our hot and cold numbers page explains why a streak does not predict the next spin.
  • “Call bets are a system.” They are just several ordinary bets placed together. Any fixed spread of chips on a single-zero wheel carries the same 2.70% edge, as our betting systems guide shows.
  • “Wheel bias makes some sections pay.” A biased wheel is extremely hard to prove; Wizard of Odds analysed one set of 8,672 spins where a number hit 278 times against 234 expected, and even that had a 1 in 466 chance of being luck.

UK rules that apply to call bets

Since 17 January 2025, autoplay is banned on all online casino games, live roulette included, so each call bet needs a fresh click or the re-bet button. Non-slot casino games must take at least five seconds per game cycle, and your net spend and time played must be shown as you play. The online slot stake limits do not apply to roulette. See UK rules for live casino for the full list.

Big call bets multiply your stake quickly, so set a deposit limit before you play and keep track of total spend, not just chip value. If you need to talk to someone, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7, and our safer gambling section lists other support.

Frequently asked questions

What are call bets in roulette?

Call bets are named groups of ordinary bets that cover a section of the wheel. The main ones are voisins du zéro, tiers du cylindre, orphelins, jeu zéro and neighbours. At a land-based table you call them out to the croupier; online you click them on the racetrack. They pay at the normal rates for the splits, corners and straight-ups inside them. Our voisins du zéro guide walks through the largest of them.

Do roulette call bets have better odds?

No. Every chip in a call bet is a standard bet with a 2.70% house edge on a single-zero wheel, so the whole bet has a 2.70% edge as well. Grouping numbers by their wheel position does not make them more likely to win than the same numbers spread across the grid. Call bets also miss out on La Partage, which only applies to even-money bets. See our roulette odds page for every standard bet.

How many chips does each call bet need?

Voisins du zéro takes 9 chips, tiers du cylindre 6, orphelins 5, jeu zéro 4 and a standard neighbours bet 5. Multiply by your chip value to get the total stake, so a voisins at £2 a chip is £18 a spin. Some games offer extended versions, such as a 10-chip tiers or a 3 or 7-chip neighbours bet. The tiers du cylindre page shows its chip map in full.

What is the racetrack in online roulette?

The racetrack is an oval panel that shows the numbers in the order they sit on the wheel, rather than in the grid order of the table. It is split into zones for voisins, tiers, orphelins and often jeu zéro. Clicking a zone places the full call bet; clicking a single number usually places a neighbours bet. Our wheel numbers page lists the full single-zero order.

Can you place call bets on American roulette?

Generally not. Call bets were built around the single-zero wheel order, and the double-zero wheel arranges numbers differently, so the classic sections do not match up. Racetracks are found on European and French tables. That suits you anyway, because single-zero bets carry a 2.70% edge against 5.26% on a double-zero wheel. Our American roulette page explains the other differences.

Which call bet is best?

None has better odds; all carry the same 2.70% edge on a single-zero wheel. The choice is about style. Voisins covers the most numbers and wins most often, but costs 9 chips. Orphelins and neighbours use 5 chips, win less often and pay more when they hit. Pick by budget: the more chips in play, the higher the average cost per spin. Our orphelins bet page shows the smaller end of the range.

Are call bets the same in live roulette?

Yes, on single-zero live tables the racetrack works just as it does in RNG games, and the bets pay at the same rates with the same 2.70% edge. Live tables are slower, so you make fewer bets an hour. Branded live games with multipliers can change the overall payout, so check each game’s published RTP. Our RNG against live roulette guide compares the two formats.

What happens if I place voisins, tiers and orphelins together?

You cover all 37 numbers with 20 chips and always get something back, but you lose on most spins. At £1 a chip, 32 numbers return £18 on your £20 stake, a £2 loss. Only 0, 2, 3, 1 and 17 return more than you staked. The average cost stays at 2.70%, or 54p a spin. Our roulette myths page covers this and other popular ideas.
