Voisins du zero (“neighbours of zero”) is a nine-chip roulette call bet covering the 17 numbers from 22 to 25 on the wheel, with zero in the middle. It wins on 17 of 37 numbers (45.95%), pays back 24 chips on 0, 2 or 3 and 18 chips on the rest, and has the usual single-zero house edge of 2.70%.

Which numbers voisins du zéro covers

Voisins du zéro is French for “neighbours of zero”, and it is the largest of the classic roulette call bets. It backs a continuous arc of 17 pockets on a single-zero wheel, running from 22 on one side of zero to 25 on the other. In wheel order, the covered numbers are:

22 – 18 – 29 – 7 – 28 – 12 – 35 – 3 – 26 – 0 – 32 – 15 – 19 – 4 – 21 – 2 – 25

That arc is almost half the wheel. The other 20 pockets are split between tiers du cylindre, the 12 numbers opposite zero, and the 8 scattered numbers of orphelins. The smaller jeu zéro bet covers the seven numbers right next to zero, all of which sit inside voisins.

On the table grid these numbers look random, because the wheel number order was designed to mix high and low, odd and even. That is exactly why the call bet exists: it lets you back a section of the wheel without hunting for 17 numbers on the layout.

Where the nine voisins du zéro chips go

Voisins uses nine chips on six separate bets. The two biggest components get double chips. Number lists and chip placements match the Wikipedia roulette article (opens in a new tab).

Split 32/3532, 35117 to 1
Corner 25-26-28-2925, 26, 28, 2928 to 1

Some printed guides list the corner as 22-26-28-29, which is not a real corner on the layout. The correct corner is 25-26-28-29; the number 22 is already covered by the 19/22 split.

Every component is a standard inside bet. The trio and corner bet carry two chips so that their per-number return lines up with the split bets, which keeps most results at the same level.

Voisins du zéro payouts number by number

When a covered number lands, only the component holding it wins; the other chips lose. Because the trio pays more relative to its share of the bet, a hit on 0, 2 or 3 is the best result.

Any of the other 20 numbers20 in 37 (54.05%)−£4.50−£9−£18

Take the £1 version. If 3 lands, the trio’s two chips win 11 to 1, which is £22 profit plus the £2 stake: £24 back. If 15 lands, the 12/15 split wins £17 plus its £1 stake: £18 back. If 4 lands, the 4/7 split gives the same £18. If 28 lands, the corner’s two chips win 8 to 1 each, which is £16 plus £2: £18 back.

Voisins du zéro odds and house edge

You win something on 17 of the 37 numbers, a 45.95% chance, and lose the whole stake on 20 of them, a 54.05% chance. That makes voisins one of the most frequent winners among inside-style bets, but each win is modest compared with the stake.

The average return is (3 × 24 + 14 × 18) ÷ 37 = 324 ÷ 37 = 8.757 chips for every 9 staked. The shortfall of 0.243 chips is 2.70% of the stake, the same house edge as any single-zero bet. Wizard of Odds’ sector bets analysis (opens in a new tab) confirms 2.70% for voisins and the other classic call bets.

What that costs in pounds

At £1 a chip, each spin costs about 24.3p on average. Over 100 spins you would stake £900 in total and expect to lose about £24.32, though any real session can land well above or below that. At £5 a chip the stake is £45 a spin and the average cost is about £1.22 a spin. Our expected value guide shows the same calculation for other bets.

How to place voisins du zéro, with or without a racetrack

On most online European and French roulette tables, one click on the Voisins zone of the racetrack places all nine chips. If a game has no racetrack, you can build the bet yourself on the layout.

  1. Choose your chip value and work out the total: nine chips, so £1 chips make a £9 bet.
  2. Place two chips on the trio line where the zero meets 2 and 3.
  3. Place one chip on each of the five splits: the line between 4 and 7, between 12 and 15, between 18 and 21, between 19 and 22, and between 32 and 35.
  4. Place two chips on the centre point where 25, 26, 28 and 29 meet.
  5. Check the bet total reads nine chips’ worth, then confirm or wait for the spin.

At a land-based table you say “voisins” with the chip value and hand over the chips; the croupier places them. Online, the re-bet button repeats the whole bet, but autoplay is not allowed on UK casino games.

How voisins du zéro behaves over a session

A bet that wins nearly half the time feels steady, but losing streaks still come round. The chance of three misses in a row is (20/37)³, about 15.8%, so you should expect it fairly often. Five misses in a row happen about 4.6% of the time from any given starting point, which at £1 a chip is a £45 run of losses.

Spread over a long session, the results still drift towards the 2.70% average loss. Voisins does not slow that drift; it just changes how the ups and downs feel. Because it puts nine chips on the table each spin, it uses a budget faster than a single even-money bet at the same chip value. Our page on variance and standard deviation explains how bet size and hit rate shape those swings.

Voisins du zéro compared with other call bets

Jeu zéro7418.92%+£14 or +£32
Tiers du cylindre12632.43%+£12
Orphelins8521.62%+£13 or +£31

Jeu zéro is a trimmed-down voisins: four chips on the seven numbers closest to zero, with smaller swings in pounds. Tiers and orphelins cover the rest of the wheel. Together, voisins, tiers and orphelins cover every pocket, but placing all three still costs 2.70% of the total stake.

Voisins du zéro myths

  • “Zero comes up more, so back its neighbours.” On a fair wheel every pocket has the same 1 in 37 chance. The section around zero is no more likely than any other 17 numbers.
  • “The dealer can land the ball near zero.” UK-licensed games must produce acceptably random results, and modern wheels are built and maintained to prevent predictable outcomes.
  • “Voisins is a system.” It is a fixed group of bets, not a strategy. No arrangement of chips changes the edge, as our roulette betting systems page explains.
  • “After lots of misses, voisins is due.” Spins are independent, so a run of misses does not raise the chance of a hit. See the gambler’s fallacy.

Playing voisins du zéro in the UK

Voisins is a single-zero bet, so you will find it on European and French tables rather than American roulette. It works the same way on RNG games and in live roulette. Branded multiplier games may change the overall payout, so check the published RTP in the help screen.

UK rules mean you must be 18 or over and verified before playing, credit cards cannot fund gambling, and each spin needs a new bet or the re-bet button. Set a deposit limit that reflects the size of a nine-chip bet. Frequently asked questions

What numbers are in voisins du zéro?

Voisins du zéro covers 17 numbers: 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25. They form one continuous arc of the single-zero wheel with zero near the middle. On the table grid they look scattered, which is why the racetrack shortcut is so useful. Our wheel numbers page shows the whole wheel order.

How many chips is voisins du zéro?

It takes nine chips. Two go on the 0-2-3 trio, one on each of the 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22 and 32/35 splits, and two on the 25-26-28-29 corner. So a voisins at £1 a chip is a £9 bet, and at £5 a chip it is £45. Always check the total before the spin. The wider family of roulette call bets uses between four and nine chips.

What does voisins du zéro pay?

It depends on the number. If 0, 2 or 3 lands, you get 24 chips back for your nine, a net win of 15 chips. If any of the other 14 covered numbers lands, you get 18 chips back, a net win of nine. On any of the 20 uncovered numbers you lose all nine chips. The pieces pay standard rates, as our roulette payouts page lists.

What are the odds of winning voisins du zéro?

You win something on 17 of the 37 numbers, a 45.95% chance on each spin. You lose the full stake 54.05% of the time. Every spin is independent, so those odds never change based on recent results. The house edge stays at 2.70%, the same as every standard bet on a single-zero wheel, as our roulette odds guide explains.

Is voisins du zéro a good bet?

It is no better or worse than any other single-zero bet in terms of cost: the house edge is 2.70%. Its appeal is a high hit rate, with nearly half of spins returning something. The downside is that it uses nine chips, so the pound cost per spin is higher than a smaller bet at the same chip value. Our best bet in roulette page compares the options.

What is the difference between voisins and jeu zéro?

Jeu zéro is a smaller bet on just the seven numbers closest to zero (12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15) using four chips. Voisins covers those seven plus ten more using nine chips. Both have a 2.70% edge. Jeu zéro wins less often but each hit pays more relative to the stake. Our jeu zéro bet page explains its chip map.

Can I play voisins du zéro on American roulette?

Usually not. The bet is built on the single-zero wheel order, and a double-zero wheel arranges its numbers differently, so the section does not translate. Look for European or French tables with a racetrack. They also carry a lower house edge, 2.70% against 5.26% on double-zero wheels. Our European roulette page covers the single-zero game.

Does voisins du zéro qualify for La Partage?

No. La Partage returns half of even-money bets when zero lands, and voisins contains no even-money bets. In fact, zero is a winning number for voisins, because it sits in the 0-2-3 trio, which returns 24 chips for your nine. The edge on voisins stays at 2.70% at a French table. Our La Partage rule page explains which bets it covers.
