Starlight Princess slot review

The Starlight Princess slot is a Pragmatic Play pay-anywhere game on a 6×5 grid: land eight or more matching symbols anywhere and they pay, then tumble away. It returns 96.50% with high volatility and a 5,000× top prize. This review explains the tumbles, the multiplier symbols, the 15 free spins and the real cost per session.

Key takeaways

  • Eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the 30-position grid make a win; no paylines.
  • Winning symbols tumble away and new ones drop in, so one spin can pay several times.
  • Four or more scatters give 15 free spins, where landed multipliers build an overall multiplier.
  • 96.50% RTP means about 3.5p lost per £1 staked on average; high volatility means big swings.

Starlight Princess slot specifications

Starlight Princess comes from Pragmatic Play, the Gibraltar-based studio behind Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza. It shares their pay-anywhere design: there are no lines or ways to learn, just a 6×5 grid where any eight or more matching symbols count as a win wherever they sit.

How the features work in Starlight Princess

Every spin starts with the pay-anywhere check. If eight or more of the same symbol appear anywhere among the 30 positions, they form a win. Position does not matter: they need not touch or line up. That is the idea our scatter symbols guide describes, applied to every symbol on the grid.

Next comes the tumble. Winning symbols are removed, the remaining symbols drop down, and new ones fall in from the top to fill the gaps. If the new arrangement contains another group of eight or more, it pays and tumbles again. The sequence continues until no new win forms. Our page on cascading reels explains the general mechanic.

Multiplier symbols can land during the base game too. When one appears, its value is applied to the wins in that spin, which is how an ordinary-looking tumble can turn into a much larger payout. The values multipliers can carry are listed in the paytable.

The bonus round is triggered by scatters. Land four or more anywhere and you receive 15 free spins. During those spins, every multiplier that lands is added to an overall multiplier that keeps growing through the round, so the later spins can carry a larger multiplier than the early ones. Pragmatic Play’s own game catalogue site (opens in a new tab) lists the studio’s games and features.

How the free spins multiplier builds: an illustration

The difference between base-game multipliers and the free spins total is easiest to see with numbers. The values below are made up to show the arithmetic only; they are not the game’s real multiplier values.

A growing overall multiplier across free spins (illustrative values)
Free spinMultiplier landedOverall multiplier after the spinA £1 win on that spin would pay

2×2×2£2

Because each new multiplier adds to the running total, a round where multipliers arrive early can be worth far more than one where they turn up on the last spin. Equally, many rounds collect little and pay modestly. That spread of results is a large part of what makes the game high volatility. Our multipliers guide compares added and multiplied multipliers.

Starlight Princess RTP and volatility in pounds

With a 96.50% RTP, the house edge is 3.50%, so every £1 staked costs 3.5p on average. That figure only becomes reliable over a very large number of spins.

What Starlight Princess costs on average
StakePer spinPer 100 spins£20 lasts (spins, before wins)
10p0.35p35p200
50p1.75p£1.7540
£13.50p£3.5020

High volatility means a lot of the return is concentrated in the free spins and in large tumble chains. Expect stretches where the balance falls steadily, punctuated by occasional bigger results. With £20, a 10p stake gives 200 spins for the scatters to appear; at £1, twenty spins is a short window on a game built like this. The volatility explainer shows how to match stake to budget.

Starlight Princess max win

The maximum is 5,000× stake. That converts to £500 at 10p, £5,000 at £1, £10,000 at the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds and £25,000 at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over. If a higher ceiling matters to you, Starlight Princess 1000 lists 15,000×. Either way, the top prize is an edge case: plan around the house edge, not the ceiling.

How to play Starlight Princess

  1. Open the information screens to check the paytable, multiplier values and the RTP of your casino’s version.
  2. Set a stake that suits your budget and the UK slot limit for your age.
  3. Press spin; UK slots have no autoplay, so every spin is started by you.
  4. Count matching symbols anywhere on the grid: eight or more of one kind pay.
  5. Let tumbles play out as winners vanish and new symbols drop in.
  6. Land four or more scatters to start 15 free spins with a growing overall multiplier.
  7. Check the session clock and net position on screen before carrying on.

UK rules on Starlight Princess: stakes and spin speed

Pay-anywhere games are still online slots, so the stake limits apply: £5 a spin for over-25s from 9 April 2025 and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds from 21 May 2025. The RTS 14 responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab) requires at least 2.5 seconds per slot spin and bans turbo and slam-stop. It also stops games celebrating a return that is no bigger than the stake, which on a tumbling game means a chain that pays back less than your bet should not be dressed up as a win.

Feature buy-ins have not been offered to British players since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, so free spins come only from scatters landing in play. Our feature buy rules page has the background.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Starlight Princess?

Starlight Princess has a published RTP of 96.50%, which means a house edge of 3.50%. Averaged over a very long run, the game keeps about 3.5p of every £1 staked. As a high-volatility slot, individual sessions can sit far from that figure. Some casinos may run different RTP versions of popular slots, so check the number in the game’s information screen. Our high RTP slots list compares returns.

How do you trigger free spins in Starlight Princess?

You trigger free spins in Starlight Princess by landing four or more scatter symbols anywhere on the grid, which awards 15 free spins. During the round, every multiplier symbol that lands is added to an overall multiplier that grows as the spins go on. Bonus buys are not offered to British players, so scatters are the only way in. Our free spins feature guide explains how these rounds work.

What is the max win on Starlight Princess?

The max win on Starlight Princess is 5,000 times your stake: £500 at 10p, £5,000 at £1, or £25,000 at the £5 UK stake cap for players aged 25 and over. The newer Starlight Princess 1000 lists a 15,000× ceiling instead. Top prizes are very rare, so budget on average costs. See our Starlight Princess 1000 review for how the two differ.

How does pay anywhere work in Starlight Princess?

Pay anywhere means that eight or more matching symbols win wherever they land among the 30 positions on the 6×5 grid. They do not need to be adjacent or on a line. After a win, those symbols tumble away and new ones fall in, which can create further wins in the same spin. Our explainer on ways to win compares this with paylines and ways systems.

Is Starlight Princess like Gates of Olympus?

Yes, Starlight Princess and Gates of Olympus are very similar on paper. Both are Pragmatic Play games on a 6×5 grid with pay-anywhere wins of eight or more, tumbles, multiplier symbols, a 96.50% RTP, high volatility and a 5,000× top prize. The theme and presentation are what mainly set them apart. Read our Gates of Olympus review for the comparison.

Is Starlight Princess high volatility?

Yes, Starlight Princess is rated high volatility. Much of its return comes from free spins with a growing multiplier and from long tumble chains, so ordinary spins often pay little or nothing. Balances can drop steadily before a bigger result arrives, and some sessions never see one. A lower stake stretches a budget across more spins. More games built the same way are gathered in our high volatility slots list.

Do multiplier symbols in Starlight Princess carry over between spins?

In the base game, multiplier symbols apply to the wins in the spin where they land. In the 15 free spins, landed multipliers are added to an overall multiplier that keeps growing through the round, which is the main difference between the two modes. The possible multiplier values are listed in the game’s paytable. Our slot multipliers explainer covers how games combine them.

Can a Starlight Princess bonus be due?

No, a Starlight Princess bonus is never due. Each spin is random and independent, so the number of spins since the last free spins round has no effect on the next one. UK technical standards also prevent games adjusting results to hit a target return. Believing a bonus is due can lead to chasing losses. Our page on the gambler’s fallacy explains why the feeling is misleading.
