Candy and sweets slots

Candy and sweets slots are online slots that swap fruit and card symbols for lollipops, jelly sweets and sugar bombs, and in the UK the theme is dominated by Pragmatic Play’s Sweet Bonanza and Sugar Rush families. This guide compares all six games on RTP, volatility and maximum win, explains how their grids pay and shows what the 1000 editions really change.

Key takeaways

  • Sweet Bonanza games pay for 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on a 6×5 grid; Sugar Rush games pay for clusters of 5 or more on a 7×7 grid.
  • Top RTPs sit in a tight band from 96.48% to 96.53%, but lower versions down to 94.50% exist.
  • The 1000 editions raise the cap to 25,000× without lifting RTP in any meaningful way.
  • Sweet Bonanza Xmas is the only medium-volatility game in the group.

What candy and sweets slots are

The candy theme is bright, cheerful and built on confectionery: sweets, lollipops and sugar bombs take the place of the usual card and fruit symbols. It is a close cousin of the fruit theme, and the two share some mechanics, so our fruit slots guide is worth a look too.

What makes the sweets theme unusual is how concentrated it is. In our checked data, every candy-themed game comes from one studio, Pragmatic Play, across two families. That makes comparisons easy and shows clearly how a studio reworks one idea for different players. The full set of themes is in our slot themes hub.

Pays anywhere against cluster pays: how sweets slots pay

The two families use different ways of counting wins, and it changes how the games feel.

Sweet Bonanza: pays anywhere

The grid is 6 reels by 5 rows, so 30 positions. There are no paylines: if 8 or more of the same symbol appear anywhere among those 30 positions, you win, with bigger counts paying more. Position doesn’t matter, only the count.

Sugar Rush: cluster pays

The grid is 7 by 7, so 49 positions. A win needs 5 or more matching symbols connected to each other as a group. Position matters here: five matching sweets scattered across the grid pay nothing unless they touch. Our cluster pays explainer covers the mechanic in general.

Related fruit game–Fruit Party (7×7, clusters of 5+)

Neither system is better value in itself: the paytable is tuned to the win rule so the published RTP holds. Pragmatic’s Fruit Party uses the same 7×7 cluster grid with fruit instead of sweets and a 96.47% RTP.

The Sweet Bonanza family

The original Sweet Bonanza is high volatility with a 96.48% RTP and a 21,100× cap. The festive Xmas edition (2019) keeps the 96.48% figure, and our checked data rates it medium volatility. Its bonus spins start when four lollipop scatters land, and random multiplier bombs can appear during them. Sweet Bonanza 1000 (2024) keeps the grid but lifts the ceiling to 25,000× and rates itself 5 out of 5 on the in-game volatility scale.

The Sweet Bonanza series page tracks the whole family, including how the brand moved into live casino.

The Sugar Rush family

Sugar Rush is a high-volatility 7×7 cluster game at 96.50% with a 5,000× cap. Sugar Rush Xmas (2023) matches both figures and publishes its main feature as bonus spins with persistent multiplier spots, meaning multiplier positions on the grid that stay in place through the round. Sugar Rush 1000 (2024) is rated very high volatility, the only game in this theme with that label, and raises the cap fivefold to 25,000×.

The RTP rises by just 0.03 to 0.05 percentage points, worth about 3p to 5p per £100 staked. The ceiling is where the change lies, especially for Sugar Rush, which goes from 5,000× to 25,000×. Funding a higher ceiling from almost the same RTP means more of the return sits in rare, large results, so normal play tends to be leaner. Our slot volatility guide explains the trade-off.

Candy slot RTP versions and what they cost

Three of the six games are documented in several RTP versions, and the casino decides which one you get. Sweet Bonanza 1000 is a good example. If £200 passes through the reels in a session, the expected loss is:

  • 96.53% version: £200 × 3.47% = about £6.94.
  • 95.52% version: £200 × 4.48% = about £8.96.
  • 94.51% version: £200 × 5.49% = about £10.98.

The game looks identical in all three versions, but the lowest costs about £4 more per £200 staked than the highest. UK-licensed casinos show the RTP in the game information, so look before you play. Our guides to slot RTP and RTP display rules explain where to find it.

The Ante Bet option on Sweet Bonanza Xmas

Sweet Bonanza Xmas lists two RTPs: 96.48% normally and 96.51% with the Ante Bet switched on. The Ante Bet is an optional extra stake described in the game’s rules; it raises what each spin costs. The RTP difference is tiny, 3p per £100 staked, while the higher cost per spin means your budget runs out sooner. Read the help screen for exactly what the Ante Bet changes before switching it on, and remember that the UK stake limit of £5 per spin (or £2 if you are 18 to 24) still applies.

Sweet Bonanza CandyLand: the live game show spin-off

The sweets theme also exists as a live dealer wheel game. According to Pragmatic Play’s Sweet Bonanza CandyLand page (opens in a new tab), the wheel has bet positions plus Sugar Bomb segments that add a multiplier of up to 10× and a free respin. The bonus games are Sweet Spins (10 bonus spins of a live Sweet Bonanza), Candy Drop (a plinko-style game where hitting all four Jackpot Boxes wins 1,000×) and Bubble Surprise. The developer states a maximum win of €500,000.

Game shows are live casino games, not slots, so the slot stake limits don’t apply to them, though other UK rules do. Our Sweet Bonanza CandyLand guide covers the wheel and its maths.

How to play candy and sweets slots online step by step

  1. Set a deposit limit that reflects what you can afford to spend on entertainment.
  2. Choose a family: Sweet Bonanza if you prefer pays-anywhere wins, Sugar Rush if you prefer clusters.
  3. Choose a volatility level: Sweet Bonanza Xmas (medium) for steadier play, a 1000 edition for the biggest swings.
  4. Open the game information and confirm the RTP version.
  5. Pick a stake: from £20, 10p gives 200 spins and 50p gives 40.
  6. Press spin for each round yourself and watch the on-screen net position; stop at your limit.

UK rules and candy slot myths

Candy slots follow every UK online slot rule: a stake limit of £5 per spin from age 25 and £2 for ages 18–24, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay, no turbo and no celebrating returns that are lower than or equal to the stake, as set out in the Gambling Commission’s RTS 14 product design standard (opens in a new tab). Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. Our slot stake limits and feature buy pages give the full picture.

  • Myth: bright, cheerful games are aimed at easy wins. The theme is presentation only; volatility in this group runs up to very high.
  • Myth: a multiplier bomb is due after a long gap. Each spin is independent. See do slots pay out more at certain times.
  • Myth: the 1000 version has better odds. The RTP difference is a few pence per £100; the change is in the ceiling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best candy slot in the UK?

The answer depends on your priorities, because the top RTPs are almost identical (96.48% to 96.53%). Sweet Bonanza is the best-known, with a 21,100× cap and high volatility. Sweet Bonanza Xmas is the steadier medium-volatility option. Sugar Rush 1000 and Sweet Bonanza 1000 have the highest caps at 25,000×. Compare them on our Sweet Bonanza page and Sweet Bonanza series page.

How does Sweet Bonanza pay out?

Sweet Bonanza pays when 8 or more matching symbols land anywhere on its 6×5 grid. There are no paylines, so where the symbols sit doesn’t matter, only how many appear. Larger counts pay more. The original has a 96.48% RTP and high volatility. The full specification is on our Sweet Bonanza page, and the scatters explainer covers how scatter-style symbols start bonus rounds.

What is the difference between Sugar Rush and Sugar Rush 1000?

Mainly the ceiling and volatility. Both use a 7×7 grid where clusters of five or more connected symbols win. The original is high volatility with a 5,000× cap and a 96.50% RTP; Sugar Rush 1000 is very high volatility with a 25,000× cap and an RTP of up to 96.53%. Expect leaner normal play on the 1000 version. See our Sugar Rush 1000 page.

Is Sweet Bonanza 1000 worth playing over the original?

Only if you want a higher ceiling and accept bigger swings. Sweet Bonanza 1000 lifts the cap from 21,100× to 25,000× with an RTP of 96.53% against 96.48%, a difference of about 5p per £100 staked. It also comes in 95.52% and 94.51% versions, which cost noticeably more, so check the help screen. Details are on the Sweet Bonanza 1000 page.

Why does Sweet Bonanza Xmas have two RTPs?

Because the game publishes one figure for normal play (96.48%) and another with the optional Ante Bet switched on (96.51%). The Ante Bet raises your stake per spin, so your budget runs out sooner, while the RTP gain is only about 3p per £100 staked. Read the game rules before using it. Our Sweet Bonanza Xmas page and slot RTP guide explain more.

Are candy slots good for beginners?

Sweet Bonanza Xmas, rated medium volatility, is the gentlest option in this theme, while the rest are high or very high, so a small budget can disappear quickly on them. Beginners often prefer lower stakes and steadier games to learn how a slot behaves. Demo play, which still needs age verification in the UK, is another way to try them first. See our beginner’s guide.

Can I use free spins on Sweet Bonanza?

Only if the offer names it or lists it as a selected game. PlayOJO’s welcome spins are on Big Bass Bonanza, and Coral’s and Ladbrokes’ spins are on selected games set out in their terms. All are for new customers aged 18+, with 10p spin values, expiry dates and payment exclusions. Check the offer terms and the casino’s lobby. Our free spins guide explains how to check.

Is Sweet Bonanza CandyLand a slot?

No, it is a live dealer game show based on the slot. A presenter spins a wheel with bet positions, Sugar Bomb multiplier segments of up to 10× and three bonus games, one of which is 10 spins of a live Sweet Bonanza. Pragmatic Play states a maximum win of €500,000. Because it is live casino, slot stake limits don’t apply. See our CandyLand guide.
