Mastercard casinos

Mastercard casinos in Britain accept Debit Mastercard, while Mastercard credit cards are refused under the 2020 credit card ban. Coral, Ladbrokes and Casumo name Mastercard in their published payment lists, and Coral and Ladbrokes still list Maestro, which is being replaced. This page covers which Mastercard cards work, how long payouts take, and why prepaid cards miss out on offers.

Key takeaways

  • Debit Mastercard is accepted; Mastercard credit cards have been banned for gambling since 14 April 2020.
  • Maestro is being phased out in Europe and should stop working by 2027 at the latest.
  • Prepaid cards don't qualify for the Coral or Ladbrokes welcome offers.
  • Coral and Ladbrokes don't publish a Mastercard-specific payout time; Casumo quotes up to 2 days for cards.
  • Santander lets you block particular transaction types without freezing the whole card.

Mastercard casinos in the UK: debit, not credit

If your bank card carries the Mastercard logo, it will work at a UK casino only if it is a Debit Mastercard. Since 14 April 2020 the Gambling Commission has barred licensed operators from accepting credit card payments, so a Mastercard credit card will be declined at every licensed site, as will a credit card used to top up an e-wallet.

Debit Mastercard spends money you already hold. That puts it on the right side of section 81 of the Gambling Act 2005, which separates full debit card payments from credit. For the Visa equivalent, see our page on Visa casinos; for cards in general, our debit card casinos guide.

Which Mastercard cards work at UK online casinos

Mastercard's name appears on several kinds of card, and they are not treated the same way. The table sorts them out using what the rules and our partners' terms say.

E-wallet cards are a grey area for players. The Payz Mastercard terms (opens in a new tab) say the card works in the UK and overseas, and MuchBetter's cards are issued by Paynovate SA under a Mastercard licence, but none of our partners says how such cards are treated at deposit. If you want an e-wallet, it is usually clearer to pay with the wallet itself; see our e-wallet casinos page.

Maestro to Debit Mastercard: the timeline for casino players

Maestro was Mastercard's older debit brand and, in the UK, the successor to Switch. According to the payments company Adyen's guide to Debit Mastercard replacing Maestro (opens in a new tab), Mastercard stopped issuing Maestro cards in Europe from 1 July 2023. Existing cards can be used until they expire, and Maestro should work until 2027 at the latest. Adyen also notes that many Maestro cards were never enabled for online shopping.

Partner Mastercard casinos and what they publish

All five of our partners list debit cards, though only some name Mastercard. The Coral and Ladbrokes help centres name Visa, Mastercard and Maestro. Casumo's UK homepage FAQ (opens in a new tab) lists Mastercard among its deposit methods and gives a £10 minimum for every method. PlayOJO's help page mentions debit cards without naming brands, and 10bet's card support comes from a third-party review.

How to add a Debit Mastercard to a casino account

  1. Complete age and identity checks; the casino can't take a deposit until they are done.
  2. Check the card is a Debit Mastercard in your own name.
  3. Open the cashier, choose Mastercard and enter the card number, expiry and security code.
  4. Pick a financial limit at the prompt that appears before your first payment.
  5. Enter the amount and confirm any security check from your bank.
  6. Keep the same card for withdrawals where you can, as most casinos pay back to the deposit method.

At Coral and Ladbrokes you can have no more than three active payment methods in a rolling 30 days, so adding and removing cards can lock you out of a new one for a while. Our account verification guide explains the identity checks.

Mastercard casino withdrawals: published times and fees

Payout speed is where the card brand can make a difference. The fastest published card route at Coral and Ladbrokes is Visa Fast Funds, which is a Visa service. For other methods, the Ladbrokes withdrawal timeframes page (opens in a new tab) gives a range of instantly to five banking days depending on the method, after internal approval. It doesn't break out a separate Mastercard time, so ask support or check the cashier when you withdraw.

  • Casumo: card withdrawals up to 2 days once approved; approval within 3 days under its policy; £3 fee on withdrawals under £10.
  • 10bet: debit card withdrawals up to 2 business days; fees not published.
  • PlayOJO: most payments processed within a few hours; money returns to the deposit method where possible.
  • Coral and Ladbrokes: no withdrawal fees.

No law sets a maximum withdrawal time, but UK rules do say you can withdraw at any time without unreasonable delay, and that a casino can't hold back money because you didn't verify within a deadline. See how long casino withdrawals take for the full answer.

Mastercard deposits, prepaid cards and offer exclusions

This is the part most likely to catch people out. A Debit Mastercard from your bank is the safest route to a welcome offer. A prepaid card, even one with a Mastercard logo, is excluded at both Coral and Ladbrokes, and Coral also rules out certain debit cards without listing them. Neteller deposits are excluded at Coral, Ladbrokes and 10bet.

A worked example shows what is at stake. At Ladbrokes, a £20 deposit by Debit Mastercard followed by £10 of slot play would bring the first day's 50 spins at 10p, a face value of £5, with up to £50 over the 10 days if you claim each day before 23:59. Make the same deposit with a prepaid card and the spins don't arrive at all, though the £10 has still been staked at the normal house edge.

Our page on payment methods excluded from bonuses explains why casinos draw these lines, and prepaid card casinos looks at prepaid options in more depth.

How far a £20 Mastercard deposit goes on different games

Game choice matters far more to your spending than card choice. Expected loss is simply the amount staked multiplied by the house edge, and the edge comes from counting outcomes. On a single-zero wheel, any even-money bet loses 1 time in 37 more than it should, an edge of 2.70%. Add a second zero and it rises to 2 in 38, or 5.26%.

Average loss on £200 of total stakes (a £20 deposit recycled about ten times)
GameHouse edgeAverage loss on £200 staked
European roulette (single zero)2.70%£5.40
American roulette (double zero)5.26%£10.52
Slot at 96% RTP4%£8.00
Slot at 94% RTP6%£12.00

These are long-run averages, not forecasts for one evening. Compare more games on our house edge table, and read European vs American roulette for why the extra zero matters.

Blocking gambling on a Debit Mastercard

Most UK banks let you stop your card paying gambling merchants, whichever scheme it runs on. The Commission's page on blocking gambling transactions (opens in a new tab) lists the banks that do. Santander is a useful example for Mastercard holders: it lets customers block specific types of transaction without freezing the card altogether, so everyday spending carries on.

Elsewhere, Lloyds and Halifax customers can also get Gamban licences, and Monzo makes you wait out a cooldown you choose, from 2 days to a year, before its block can be lifted. Card blocks won't usually catch bank transfers, so for a wider barrier add GAMSTOP and see our bank gambling blocks guide.

Mastercard or Visa: does the card brand matter at a casino?

For deposits, hardly at all. Both debit brands are accepted at all our partners that name brands, and both fall under the same rules on credit, verification and limits. The one published difference is at Coral and Ladbrokes, where the fast Visa Fast Funds payout route is specific to Visa. Fees, limits and offer eligibility are otherwise the same for both.

Advantages

  • Widely accepted, and named by Coral, Ladbrokes and Casumo
  • Spends your own money, with no credit involved
  • Bank gambling blocks work on it
  • Usually qualifies for slot welcome offers

Drawbacks

  • No published Mastercard-specific fast payout at Coral or Ladbrokes
  • Prepaid Mastercards miss out on Coral and Ladbrokes offers
  • Maestro cards are on borrowed time

Where to use a Debit Mastercard: partner offers

All three offers below are built around slots, so they won't help if you mainly play table games; for those, read each casino's table lobby and terms. A Debit Mastercard deposit works for each, subject to the exclusions noted. Each is open to over-18s only, with terms attached.

  • Ladbrokes: deposit, then play £10 or more on slots, and get 50 free spins a day for 10 days (maximum 500), 10p each, claimed before 23:59 each day and valid for 7 days, with no wagering. Prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers are excluded.
  • Coral: from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027, deposit and bet £10 or more on slots for 100 free spins on selected games at 10p each. Accept them within 48 hours and use them within 7 days; winnings carry no wagering. Prepaid cards, certain debit cards, Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe and Skrill don't qualify.
  • PlayOJO: first deposit of £10 or more for 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each, no wagering and winnings paid in cash. New UK customers outside Northern Ireland; designated offer link only; not combinable with other offers.

Because one operator runs Coral and Ladbrokes, holding new accounts at both may not be possible. Deposit only money you are happy to spend on entertainment.

A standard Debit Mastercard deposit can open these slot offers, but prepaid cards are excluded at Coral and Ladbrokes, and Coral also excludes certain debit cards. 18+, terms apply.

Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open another; check the terms first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Mastercard at UK online casinos?

Yes, as long as it is a Debit Mastercard. Coral, Ladbrokes and Casumo name Mastercard in their payment lists, and PlayOJO and 10bet accept debit cards. Mastercard credit cards are refused at every UK-licensed casino because of the credit card ban that began on 14 April 2020. You will need to verify your age and identity before the first deposit. See our casino payments hub for other methods.

Can I still use a Maestro card at a casino?

Possibly, but not for long. Coral and Ladbrokes still list Maestro, yet Mastercard stopped issuing new Maestro cards in Europe from 1 July 2023, and existing cards should stop working by 2027 at the latest. Many Maestro cards were never enabled for online payments either. If you still have one, your bank should replace it with a Debit Mastercard, which you can add to your account. Our debit card casinos page covers the switch.

Do prepaid Mastercards qualify for casino bonuses?

Not at Coral or Ladbrokes, whose welcome offers exclude prepaid cards outright. Casumo says payment restrictions apply without naming them, so check its terms. PlayOJO's key terms don't name exclusions, but read the full terms before relying on that. A standard Debit Mastercard from your bank is the safer route if you want an offer. Our page on why some payment methods are excluded from bonuses explains the reasoning.

How long do Mastercard casino withdrawals take?

Between a few hours and several days, depending on the casino. Casumo quotes up to 2 days for cards after approval, 10bet up to 2 business days, and PlayOJO processes most payments within a few hours. The Coral and Ladbrokes help pages give a general range of instantly to five banking days by method after approval, and their quickest published route, Visa Fast Funds, applies to Visa. Our casino withdrawal times page compares every method.

Are there fees for using Mastercard at a casino?

Our partners mostly charge nothing to withdraw. Neither Coral nor Ladbrokes charges a withdrawal fee, by their own statements, and Casumo charges £3 only when you withdraw less than £10. PlayOJO and 10bet don't publish card fees, so look in the cashier. Your bank's own charges, such as for a payment in a foreign currency, are separate and rarely apply at a UK casino. The withdrawal fees page has the full picture.

Can I use a Mastercard credit card through PayPal or another e-wallet?

No, not for gambling at a UK-licensed casino. The credit card ban covers payments made through money service businesses, and the Commission expects operators accepting e-wallets such as PayPal or Skrill to make sure the money wasn't loaded from a credit card. Fund any e-wallet you use for gambling from a debit card or bank account. Our explainer on the credit card ban sets out the rule.

How do I stop my Mastercard being used for gambling?

Turn on your bank's gambling block, which most big UK banks now offer in their app. Santander lets you block particular transaction types without freezing the card, while Monzo, Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax, HSBC, NatWest and Starling all have their own versions. Some add a waiting period before the block can be removed. For wider protection, register with GAMSTOP. Read more in can I block gambling payments with my bank.

Is Mastercard or Visa better for casino payments?

For deposits they are effectively equal: both debit brands are accepted, both fall under the same rules, and both usually qualify for slot offers. The main published difference is at Coral and Ladbrokes, where Visa Fast Funds offers a quick card payout route that is specific to Visa, typically within 4 hours after approval. Elsewhere, payout times are quoted for cards in general. Our Visa casinos page explains Fast Funds in detail.
