Call bets vs inside bets: the difference
What is the difference between call bets and inside bets? Inside bets are single chips placed on numbers in the grid of the roulette table. Call bets are named packages of several inside bets that cover a section of the wheel, placed by announcing them or tapping the racetrack. Both carry the same 2.70% house edge on a single-zero wheel.
Key takeaways
- Inside bets are placed on the table grid: straight up, split, street, corner and six line.
- Call bets are bundles of inside bets grouped by wheel position, such as voisins du zéro, tiers and orphelins.
- Call bets use several chips at once, so the real stake is the chip value times the chip count.
- On a single-zero wheel every one of these bets has a 2.70% house edge.
- Inside bets follow
- The table layout
- Call bets follow
- The wheel order
- Chips per bet
- Inside 1; call bets 4 to 9
- House edge (single zero)
- 2.70% on both
- Call bets offered on
- Single-zero wheels
The key difference between call bets and inside bets
The simplest way to see it: an inside bet is about the table, a call bet is about the wheel. On the betting layout the numbers run 1 to 36 in a neat grid of three columns. On the wheel they are scattered, so 26 sits beside 0 and 3, and 32 sits beside 15. Inside bets use the grid; call bets use the wheel’s order.
A call bet is built out of inside bets. Voisins du zéro, for example, is nine chips spread across splits, a trio and a corner that happen to cover the 17 pockets nearest zero on the wheel. So every call bet contains inside bets, but an inside bet on its own is never a call bet. This question sits in our casino questions hub alongside other roulette answers.
Inside bets explained: odds and payouts
Inside bets are placed directly on numbers or the lines between them. The fewer numbers you cover, the more the bet pays. Single-zero chances come from counting pockets out of 37:
| Bet | Numbers covered | Pays | Chance of winning | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35 to 1 | 1 in 37 (2.70%) | 2.70% |
| Split | 2 | 17 to 1 | 2 in 37 (5.41%) | 2.70% |
| Street | 3 | 11 to 1 | 3 in 37 (8.11%) | 2.70% |
| Corner | 4 | 8 to 1 | 4 in 37 (10.81%) | 2.70% |
| Six line | 6 | 5 to 1 | 6 in 37 (16.22%) | 2.70% |
Each has its own guide: the straight up bet, split bet, street bet, corner bet and six line bet. The Wizard of Odds roulette basics (opens in a new tab) list the same payouts for both wheel types.
Call bets explained: the four classic packages
Announced bets, the more accurate name noted by Wikipedia’s roulette article (opens in a new tab), come from French and European casinos. Each one covers a slice of the single-zero wheel with a fixed pattern of chips:
| Call bet | Numbers | Chips | Made from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voisins du zéro | 17 | 9 | 2 chips on the 0-2-3 trio, 1 each on splits 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22 and 32/35, 2 on the 25-26-28-29 corner |
| Jeu zéro (zero spiel) | 7 | 4 | Splits 0/3, 12/15 and 32/35, plus 26 straight up |
| Tiers du cylindre | 12 | 6 | Splits 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30 and 33/36 |
| Orphelins | 8 | 5 | 1 straight up, plus splits 6/9, 14/17, 17/20 and 31/34 |
| Neighbours | 5 | 5 | A number and the two either side of it on the wheel, each straight up |
The Wizard of Odds sector bets page (opens in a new tab) gives the same chip counts and notes that some online games let a neighbours bet use 3 or 7 numbers instead of 5. Each package has a page of its own: voisins du zéro, jeu zéro, tiers du cylindre, orphelins and the neighbours bet.
Call bets and inside bets side by side
| Inside bets | Call bets | |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | Position on the table grid | Position on the wheel |
| Chips | One per bet | Four to nine, fixed pattern |
| How placed | Chip on a number or line | Announced to the croupier or tapped on the racetrack |
| Wheels | Single and double zero | Single zero |
| Payout per winning chip | 35, 17, 11, 8 or 5 to 1 | Same, because the chips are inside bets |
| Net result of a win | Fixed by the payout | Depends on which chip wins and how many lose |
| House edge (single zero) | 2.70% | 2.70% |
The most practical difference is stake size. A £2 straight-up bet costs £2. A £2 voisins costs £18, because it is nine chips. Players new to the racetrack sometimes miss this.
Worked examples: call bets against inside bets in pounds
Tiers du cylindre at £1 a chip (£6). Six splits cover 12 numbers. Whichever number lands, exactly one split wins, returning £18 (17 to 1 plus the stake) while the other five chips lose: a net +£12. That happens 12 times in 37. The other 25 numbers lose £6. Over 37 spins: 12 × £12 − 25 × £6 = −£6, an average loss of £6/37 per spin, which is 2.70% of £6.
Six line at £6. One chip covering six numbers on the grid wins 6 times in 37 and pays 5 to 1, a net +£30. The other 31 numbers lose £6. Over 37 spins: 6 × £30 − 31 × £6 = −£6. Exactly the same average cost as the tiers bet, with half the hit rate and more than double the win.
Orphelins at £1 a chip (£5). A hit on 1 or on 17 returns £36 (17 is covered by two splits, which together return £36), a net +£31. A hit on 6, 9, 14, 20, 31 or 34 returns £18, a net +£13. The other 29 numbers lose £5. Over 37 spins: 2 × £31 + 6 × £13 − 29 × £5 = −£5, again 2.70%.
How to place a call bet and an inside bet online
Online European and French tables usually show the main grid and a racetrack, an oval version of the wheel order, together. Here is the routine for each:
- Confirm in the help screen that the table uses a single zero.
- For an inside bet, pick a chip and place it on a number, a line between two numbers, the end of a row or a junction of four numbers.
- For a call bet, open the racetrack and tap the named section: Voisins, Tiers, Orphelins or Zero.
- For a neighbours bet, tap a number on the racetrack and check how many neighbours the game adds.
- Read the total stake before the betting window closes, since call bets place several chips at once.
Some games also let you save favourite combinations. Those are still just groups of inside and outside bets with the same 2.70% edge.
Myths about call bets and inside bets
- Call bets give better odds. They don’t; each chip is an ordinary inside bet at 2.70%.
- Covering a sector follows the dealer’s throw. Each spin is independent, and no sector is ‘due’. See roulette myths.
- Inside bets are riskier, so they cost more. They are more volatile, but the expected cost per pound is the same.
- More chips means more safety. Spreading chips raises the hit rate but also the total stake, and the expected loss per spin grows with it.
Outside bets such as red or black follow the same rule on a standard wheel. Only French La Partage rules change the maths, and only for even-money bets, which are outside bets, not inside bets or call bets.
Call bets or inside bets: which suits you?
Since the house edge is identical, the choice comes down to style and budget. Call bets suit players who enjoy the French tradition and like covering a group of numbers with one tap. Inside bets suit players who prefer to control each chip, or who want a small, simple stake.
If you want a lower cost overall rather than a different shape, the answer is neither: an even-money bet at a French roulette table with La Partage costs 1.35%. Our answer to what is the best bet in roulette compares every option.

Frequently asked questions
Are call bets inside bets?
They are built from inside bets, but form a separate category. Each call bet is a fixed bundle of splits, straight-ups, a trio or a corner that together cover a section of the wheel. Voisins du zéro, for example, uses nine chips across those bet types. Because every chip is an inside bet, the payouts and the 2.70% edge are the same. Our roulette call bets guide covers each bundle.
Why are they called call bets?
The name comes from land-based casinos, where players call the bet out to the croupier, who places the chips. Wikipedia notes that the more accurate name is announced bets. Online, the same bets are placed by tapping the racetrack, an oval drawing of the wheel order beside the table. Our table layout page shows where the racetrack sits on a typical online game.
Do call bets have better odds than inside bets?
No, call bets and inside bets have exactly the same 2.70% house edge on a single-zero wheel. A call bet just combines several inside bets, each with that edge. What changes is the hit rate and win size: tiers du cylindre wins 12 times in 37, while a straight-up wins once in 37 but pays far more. Our roulette odds page lists every bet’s chance.
Can you make call bets on American roulette?
These are single-zero bets and aren’t offered on standard American tables. The classic packages are built around the European wheel order, and the double-zero wheel has a different sequence and an extra 00 pocket. American roulette also costs more, with a 5.26% edge on most bets. Our page asking why American roulette has two zeros explains the different wheel.
How much does a voisins du zéro bet cost?
A voisins du zéro bet costs nine times your chip value. Two chips go on the 0-2-3 trio, one each on five splits and two on the 25-26-28-29 corner, covering 17 numbers. At £1 a chip that is £9 a spin; at £5 a chip it is £45. The house edge is 2.70% either way. Our voisins du zéro page shows the full chip map.
What are the main inside bets in roulette?
The main inside bets are the straight up (1 number, 35 to 1), split (2 numbers, 17 to 1), street (3 numbers, 11 to 1), corner (4 numbers, 8 to 1) and six line (6 numbers, 5 to 1). They are placed on numbers or the lines between them on the table grid. All carry a 2.70% edge on a single-zero wheel. Our roulette payouts page covers each in more detail.
Is a call bet the same as a neighbours bet?
A neighbours bet is one type of call bet. It covers a chosen number plus the two numbers either side of it on the wheel, normally with five straight-up chips. Some online games let you choose three or seven numbers instead. Like the other call bets, it carries the standard 2.70% edge. Our neighbours bet page explains how to place one on the racetrack.
Which should a beginner use, call bets or inside bets?
A beginner is usually better off starting with simple inside or outside bets, because the stake is obvious. Call bets place several chips at once, which can make a spin cost far more than expected. Both have the same 2.70% edge on a single-zero wheel, so neither is cheaper. Start with a budget and a small chip value. Our how to play roulette guide walks through the basics.
