How the features work in Chaos Crew

Chaos Crew's design is lean: one multiplier wild in the base game and one bonus round in which multipliers build above the reels. Both are covered below in the order you would meet them.

The Cranky Cat wild

Wins come from 15 lines across the 5x5 grid. The Cranky Cat wild substitutes to complete those lines and carries a multiplier of 2x, 3x or 5x. If several Cranky Cats sit in the same win, their values are multiplied: a 2x and a 5x together make 10x, and a 3x with a 5x makes 15x.

Three scatters, three spins

Landing three scatters starts the bonus with three spins and a multiplier above each reel. Multiplier symbols that land in the round do two things: they reset the spins remaining to three, and they either add to or multiply the multiplier above their reel. The round therefore lasts as long as new multiplier symbols keep arriving before the count reaches zero.

How the bonus pays

When the spins run out, the reel multipliers are added together and the total is paid as a multiple of your stake. If, say, the five values ended up adding to 40x, a 20p spin would return £8. The add-or-multiply step is what lets one reel's figure jump sharply late in the round.

The help screen shows the starting value above each reel and which symbols add or multiply, and Slotcatalog's Chaos Crew entry (opens in a new tab) gives the same outline.

What 5 of 5 volatility means on Chaos Crew

Hacksaw grades its games on a five-point volatility scale, and Chaos Crew sits at the top. In plain terms, a large part of the 96.30% return is concentrated in uncommon, larger outcomes. The flip side is that the ordinary run of spins pays back much less than 96p in the pound, so balances tend to fall steadily between the bigger moments.

Hacksaw rates some of its other games, such as Dork Unit and RIP City, at 3 of 5. If you have played those and found them lively, expect Chaos Crew to feel noticeably harsher on a budget. The Wizard of Odds slot page (opens in a new tab) points out that volatility and RTP are independent: two games with the same RTP can behave very differently in a session.

The Chaos Crew grid and 15 paylines

The game uses a square 5x5 window, which gives 25 symbol positions. Across those run 15 fixed paylines, or 0.6 lines per position, a sparser coverage than on many 5x3 slots. Fewer lines across more cells is part of why the base game can feel quiet: many symbol arrangements simply don't sit on a line.

The same 5x5, 15-line layout appears in Wanted Dead or a Wild, one of Hacksaw's best-known slots. Chaos Crew's multiplier wilds and reel-multiplier bonus are explained in the features section above; our wild symbols guide and multipliers guide cover the general mechanics.

Chaos Crew RTP: 96.30% turned into pounds

The house edge is 3.70%. Another way to see it: divide £1 by 3.70% and you get about £27.03, the amount you stake, on average, for every £1 the game keeps. That gives a neat way to picture the cost at different stakes.

These are long-run averages. On a 5 of 5 game, your actual result over 100 or even 600 spins can be far from them, most often below, occasionally far above. Our expected value guide explains why the average and the typical session differ.

Chaos Crew max win in UK stakes

The ceiling is 10,000 times stake. Here is what that looks like at the stakes UK players can use.

10,000x max win by stake
StakeMax win
10p£1,000
50p£5,000
£1£10,000
£2 (top stake for 18–24s)£20,000
£5 (top stake for 25+)£50,000

There is no official figure for how often the cap is hit, and we don't reproduce third-party estimates. Treat it as the boundary of the game's range, and read what is a slot's max win for why caps exist.

Hacksaw's RTPs cluster tightly around 96.2% to 96.4%, so the choice between these games is mostly about volatility and ceiling rather than cost. If you want the Chaos Crew look with a higher cap, the sequel doubles it; if you want a gentler ride, RIP City's 3 of 5 rating is the obvious step down. Browse more in our slot reviews.

Hacksaw Gaming launched in September 2018 and is headquartered in Malta. Its parent, Hacksaw AB, has been listed on Nasdaq Stockholm under the ticker HACK since 25 June 2025, with Christoffer Källberg as group CEO. Its best-known slot is Wanted Dead or a Wild.

Chaos Crew in the UK: bonus buys, stakes and speed

If you have seen Chaos Crew described elsewhere with an option to buy straight into a bonus, that does not apply here. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. The Commission's games warning for online operators (opens in a new tab) explains its concern, and our feature buy rules page covers what it means in practice.

  • Maximum stake £5 per spin at 25 and over, £2 at 18–24 (UK slot stake limits).
  • At least 2.5 seconds per spin; no turbo, quick-spin or slam-stop.
  • No autoplay, so every spin is started by hand.
  • Net spend and session time are displayed as you play.

How to play Chaos Crew online

  1. Register at a UKGC-licensed casino and pass the age and identity checks.
  2. Set a deposit limit when you are prompted before your first deposit.
  3. Open Chaos Crew and read the help screen for the paylines, wilds and bonus rules.
  4. Choose a stake suited to 5 of 5 volatility; 10p gives 200 spins from £20.
  5. Spin manually and let each round complete.
  6. Stop when you reach your budget or time limit, whatever the balance.

Planning a budget for a top-volatility slot

  • Decide the amount first. Treat it as the cost of the entertainment, and don't top up mid-session.
  • Use the tools. Deposit limits and reality checks are built into every UK casino account.
  • Don't chase. Raising the stake after losses increases the cost per hour without changing the 3.70% edge.
  • Get help early. If gambling stops being fun, GamCare (opens in a new tab) runs the free National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, 24 hours a day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Chaos Crew?

Chaos Crew has an RTP of 96.30%, which means a house edge of 3.70%. Over the long run, that is about 3.7p lost for every £1 staked, or roughly £27 staked for every £1 of average loss. Individual sessions can be far above or below that figure. Check the help screen at your casino for the version in use. Our RTP guide explains the figure in more depth.

How volatile is Chaos Crew?

Chaos Crew is rated 5 out of 5 for volatility by Hacksaw Gaming, its highest band. That means much of its return comes from uncommon, larger wins, with long quiet runs in between. Budgets can disappear quickly at higher stakes, so small stakes are the gentler approach. Our volatility explainer compares the different bands with worked examples.

What is the max win on Chaos Crew?

The maximum win on Chaos Crew is 10,000 times your stake. That is £1,000 at 10p, £10,000 at £1 and £50,000 at the £5 UK maximum for players aged 25 and over. It is the ceiling for a single round, not a likely outcome. Chaos Crew 2 doubles the cap to 20,000x. See our Chaos Crew 2 review for the sequel's figures.

How many paylines does Chaos Crew have?

Chaos Crew has 15 fixed paylines on a 5x5 grid of 25 positions. That works out at 0.6 lines per position, so many symbol arrangements don't sit on a line, which helps explain the quiet base game. Hacksaw's Wanted Dead or a Wild uses the same layout. Our paylines guide explains how line-based games pay.

Can you buy the bonus in Chaos Crew in the UK?

No, there is no bonus buy on Chaos Crew for British players. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the bonus must be reached through normal spins. Versions described for other markets may show a buy option. Our UK feature buy rules page explains the Commission's reasoning.

Who made Chaos Crew?

Hacksaw Gaming made Chaos Crew and released it in 2020. Hacksaw launched in September 2018, is headquartered in Malta and holds a UK Gambling Commission licence. Its parent company has been listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since June 2025. Read our Hacksaw Gaming studio page for a table of its games and their published figures.

Is Chaos Crew the same as Wanted Dead or a Wild?

No, they are different games, but they share Hacksaw's 5x5, 15-payline layout and high volatility. Wanted Dead or a Wild has a slightly higher RTP at 96.38% and a higher max win at 12,500x, against Chaos Crew's 96.30% and 10,000x. Themes and bonus features differ, so read each help screen. See our Wanted Dead or a Wild review for its details.

What stake should I use on Chaos Crew?

A low stake suits Chaos Crew best because its 5 of 5 volatility means long losing runs are common. At 10p, £20 gives 200 spins; at £1 it gives 20. UK law caps the stake at £5 for over-25s and £2 for 18 to 24s. Choose a stake that keeps play within a budget you set in advance. Our how long £20 lasts page has more examples.
